    Kareem: A Minority of One

Came out last November HBO. I just caught it.

84 & 85 Celtics v Lakers Finals had a spot in the piece. True 5 on 5 w/ each player an all star. Almost cried.

They talked about Jerry Buss, of course. Learned a lot. Wilt... UCLA.... It's all included for one low price.

Saw Kareem, the Lakers legend, just said Duncan had a better career than Kobe. Hmmm.

With all the arguments about police shootings I am surprised this film has not received more attention. The main character in the film is a former Sheriff who founded the SWAT team 30yrs earlier that kill his son in law during a stand off. It is not a sensationalized documentary. It is an examination of cause and effect of policy and training. Worth the time. I found it on Vodlocker. Here are some of the review snippets from the films home page.

"The first major documentary on a topic of fast-rising public interest — the increasing militarization of U.S. police departments — “Peace Officer” turns out to be as engrossing and well crafted as it is timely" -- VARIETY

"Brad Barber and Scott Christopherson’s half “The Thin Blue Line” - style crime procedural, half political study about the militarization and overreach of police, is a refreshingly objective and levelheaded documentary that’s as culturally relevant as it is expertly paced and captivating." -- IndieWire

"A powerful and important film about policing tactics that have crept into everyday usage with little scrutiny" -- THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

“Scott Christopherson & Brad Barber's "Peace Officer” is the most level-headed treatment I have seen so far in the growing debate over police use of deadly force.” -- ROGEREBERT.COM

"Filmmakers Scott Christopherson and Brad Barber make Dub Lawrence the face of America’s complex crisis over the militarization of law enforcement."

    THE DAILY BEAST

"Whatever the viewer’s politics, Peace Officer is an important film, likely to challenge, provoke, anger, and sadden in equal measures." -- Christianity Today

I think too many people have too much invested in the game to admit it's out of control. Having strong political ties only makes it more idifficult to imagine change will come sooner than later.

PEACE OFFICER is an intersting title.

While I agree the 'invested interest' motive is a huge factor, I also think that group-think by well-meaning folks in LE prevents them from recognizing the enormity of the problem.

Case in point: One of my nephews is a 10-year veteran as a police officer, having worked with numerous LE departments in the wider area of his state on special assignments, and became a state trooper this year. We recently discussed/debated this issue after I responded to a Facebook post he made dismissing the concerns over heavy-handedness in policing. From his comments in that private discussion, he completely believes that there is no systemic problem in policing in America and that the press reports over it are due to political ramble rousing. And that police departments in America are essentially properly identifying and handling "bad apples" on their forces....

You can imagine that I was deeply saddened to hear this from him, as I know him to have a great deal of personal integrity. Because, sadly, it speaks volumes of how he, as a veteran police officer, as been inculcated into the closed-ranks self-justifying culture of American law enforcement.

I sadly, wholeheartedly, agree. One take away that I got from the film is how justified LE feels about their actions due to the training they receive. They are completely unable to accept that their behavior often creates a situation that can only be perilous for the suspect. The political nature of the country right now is keeping dogmatic lines drawn that will continue to prevent positive resolutions from being investigated and implemented. This film also shows just how unwilling LE is to investigate itself. Many already believe this but this film, through the interviews, shows just how self righteous LE can be regardless of the evidence offered.

The group think and well meaning folks is completely accurate. I don't know how you change this. Right now they feel like they are being attacked unfairly but how do you have a discussion based on improvement when they will never admit fault?

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned, since it's a 2015 release. Fucking incredible, the most convincing depiction of the hopelessness of the drug war and inevitable corruption of power: https://www.netflix.com/watch/80039606

Just watched Steve Aoki, Jake the Snake and one about this crazy John Dupont guy on Netflix. All A+.

It is so funny the one about DuPont is about a very wealthy guy losing his mind thinking people close to him are trying to kill him, having paranoid delusions. Sound familiar? (our boy Adzizzy has been on a 3 day twitter rampage BTW, more of the same)

Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson was made by Ken Burns for PBS in 2005. I watched it when it first came out and rewatched it yesterday. It's an amazing story and the production value of the film is top notch.

Background for anyone unfamiliar with Jack Johnson-
In the early 1900s, the three main sports in America were baseball, horse racing, and boxing. Jack Johnson taunted the heavyweight champion into fighting him, won, and became the first minority celebrity in American history. Boxing fans then went looking for the "great white hope" to take the belt back.

The best story about Johnson, which I can't believe is true but I hope it is, is that in 1915 he was flying down a street in his sports car. A cop pulled him over and informed him that it would be a $50 fine (a large sum in 1915). Jack Johnson supposedly handed him a hundred dollar bill and told the cop that he would be coming back this way too.
