Models are consolidating. When Sandy gets back out over OPEN water and loses the friction with land, she will likely strengthen. The collision with cold air will be like throwing water on a grease fire.

Right now the track is right over Delaware Bay, a worst case scenario. That puts the dirty side of the storm over Manhattan and North Jersey.

To have the entire North East without power, right before a Presidential election?

Updates will follow as events warrant.

Depending on how bad it is, and the response by Obama, this event could be what decides the election.

Having been through 3 hurricanes myself here is lazy way of preparing.

Fill up your bath tubs with water. You can use it to flush the toilets by pouring in with a bucket. Can also use the tub water for drinking.

Get 3 to 5 gallons of drinking water.
Have some easy to eat cold foods like cans of ravioli.
Clean out your fridge of stuff you don't need -- pickle jars with 1 pickle.
Put all porch furniture and things tat can fly away in side.

If you have pets -- have a Carrier. You can leave it open and allow your dog to go in their if they are freaked out. If you have to take off will be very important to have a carrier.

Make sure you have a flashlight that works and have an extra set of batteries.

Have something ready to waste time. We always had it nice because we were on the police grid so even when the storm was at the worst we had cable and internet. You most likely will have neither so make sure your kindle or laptop is juiced up and you have some Arrested Development DVDs.

One last thing that may seem obvious. If the eye is going to pass over or near you the storm comes in 2 parts with the second part generally being the worst. It is very strange. When the eye comes the storm will stop, the sun comes out and the birds start chirping again. About 20 or 30 mins later the back part of the storm comes, the sky goes all Wizard of OZ and you get the really crazy part of the storm.

This storm would have come across NC like usual but we have a cold front coming down from Canada that is pushing it out to sea and up the East Coast.

Franklin: Diff between trop cyclone and ET: With tropical, need storms to bring fast winds down to surface. Very spotty high winds.

Franklin: In #Sandy's case, it's the large-scale pressure field driving winds. This will give us a large area with a uniform wind field.

Question: Can you quantify this in terms of history? Barometric pressure? Franklin: Intensification due to tropical processes ending. #Sandy
Uccellini: The way the two systems are merging are contributing to each other to enhance the process. #Sandy

Uccellini: #Sandy has the potential of "standing on its own with respect to minimum surface pressure%u2026 [size]… and rainfall."

Uccellini: With #Sandy, "we're dealing with categories we don't normally see."

Question: Why is #Sandy moving so slow? Uccellini: Blocking flow - upper level systems aren't moving W-to-E like normal.

Uccellini: "Extraordinary" blocking pattern is also going to contribute to the westward movement that will drive #Sandy toward the coast.

Question: What's causing this blocking? Uccellini: "I am sure this will be the cause of research…" #Sandy

Question (from Max Mayfield!): If #Sandy becomes ET, who issues advisories? NHC or HPC? When will the handoff?

Franklin: Goal is continuity of service. TC/ETC conversion is not an on/off time. Gives flexibility to when the handoff happens. #Sandy

Franklin: Plan for #Sandy is for HPC to continue to issue public advisories "earlier than they normally do", possibly before landfall.

Franklin: @NHC_Atlantic will continue to "lead the internal NWS coordination"with HPC, OPC, etc. #Sandy

Question: Was it HPC who came up with "Frankenstorm"? Seems to have taken off. Is that how it will be referred to? #Sandy

Uccellini: Phrase came out of an HPC discussion. Storms normally get names after the event. During event, it will be #Sandy.

Franklin: When HPC takes over, advisories will be under header "Post-tropical cyclone #Sandy"

Question: Normal models (WRF, NAM, etc.) forecasting big differences than @NHC_Atlantic track. Why? Franklin: NHC rarely uses NAM. #Sandy

Franklin: Two best performers long-term with track and ET transition are GFS and ECMWF. "Head and shoulders" above others. #Sandy

Franklin: Regional models (HWRF, GFDL) not being used because structure of #Sandy not well-represented.

Franklin: Leaning toward the ECMWF in part due to the fact that it picked up on the westward turn sooner than GFS. Expect EC > GFS. #Sandy

Uccellini: When we have phasing as we will have with #Sandy, *all* models are challenged by these kinds of system mergers.

Question: Can you be specific about precip - 4-8" of rain, up to 2' of snow. Entirety of storm or just a couple of days? #Sandy
Uccellini: Precip numbers for the entire event of #Sandy but locally heavier amounts are possible.
Uccellini: Full moon is Sunday, highest tides usually 1-2 days after. Could be multiple tidal cycles with #Sandy.

Question: Have you ever seen anything like this? #Sandy
Uccellini: In some ways, this is similar to the "perfect storm", other ways different. '91 had colder air, #Sandy is stronger TC.

    End of Media call.

Gonna be interesting to see where this hits, some models have it hitting north of other ones, if that is the case Philly/New York will be spared from the worst of it.

The further south it hits the worse it will be for the East Coast, top side of the storm is where all the storm surge is. Eye and south you will have opposite affect and not much to worry about but rain and wind.

Basically hope it goes more up the coast, then all the bad stuff will be for much less populated New England around Boston and north. If it hangs a left sooner and hits Maryland or a little south, Jersey and New York are gonna get slammed.

The new models are in. I think Chinamaniac is in the danger zone. The GFS and Euro just came in.

See, you laugh now. I never said you were going to be swept out to sea. But what happens when power is out for a few days? NYC will be locked down, but the looters and drifters will drift East into Long Island. Think about a bunch of 408 Mikes in the thousands up in your grill.

They are predicting it to be a Category 1. 75-80mph winds. I just drove through Santa Ana today with 65mph winds.

    Still alive and well.

They are also saying this could bring 30 foot waves into places like the LI Sound...

    That could be a problem.

Don't see any roofs being blown off though.

Get real bro. 65 mph winds? How cute! Have you been listening to bottomset? The whole east coast is going to be gone by next week. Mass chaos and looting will ensue. Money will be worthless, bottled water will be the new currency. Trees will be down, power will be out, and even flooding! Things we have never dealt with. We are in uncharted territory kids!
