Odd thing with Lasorda is his son died of AIDS and became very defensive that he was not gay and somehow just contracted it elsewhere. He really made a big deal about it.
Guy had a great run. Never signed a contract longer than a year. I kinda felt he left a lot of money on the table.
Decent dude I suppose, he and Kirk Gibson are linked forever. Nobody would really give a shit about Kirk if he was not inserted in the 9th inning of the World Series and hit the homerun. Yeah he hit that flat curve ball in the seats, but Lasorda but him in.
Fuck Lasorda. Youppi Had this asshole pegged from jump street.
who?
Dems- Dont blame Trump for Tommy’s death.
Does anyone else remember the Lasorda's Italian restaurant chain from the '80s? There was a location just a few blocks from where I grew up but I don't remember ever going in for food.
Weird. Not that Tommy died at 93 -- longer than anyone expected him to live -- but the order of events.
About a month ago, he was hospitalized, and in critical condition. Looked like he was a gonner, only to start improving, and then recover. Dodgers fans really thought the guy was simply going to live forever.
Then he improved enough to where he was released. Shortly after coming back home on January 5, he went into cardiac arrest, and died yesterday.
I've seen this a lot of times -- someone's condition looks dire, they improve, they are released, and then they die. In fact, something similar happened to Justin "es0terix" Shronk, a member of our forum community from back in the day, but Shronk sadly was only in his 20s.
Anyway, RIP Tommy. Dodgers fans loved him because he really wrapped his entire identity around the Dodgers, and had such passion for it. He was such an important figure to the team and fanbase that they couldn't fire him after letting him go as manager in the mid-90s. They gave him a fairly meaningless Vice President position (he derisively called it "VP of Parking" at one point), and always kept him on the payroll, just so he'd remain a Dodger. Even cheapskate Frank McCourt didn't have the heart to get rid of him.
Tommy is an inspiration to fat guys everywhere. Obese most of his life, Tommy still made it to age 93. He beat the odds in his career, too, transitioning from failed Major League pitcher to a beloved managerial figure.
Sadly, another 1927-born Dodgers legend likely isn't far behind. Vin Scully lost his wife of 47 years this week, and is 93 himself. You know what often happens to longtime married couples when one of them dies, especially if the surviving one is over 90. I'm hoping not, but I wouldn't bet money on him living much longer.
RIP Tommy, finally joining that "Great Dodger in the Sky"
Regarding his gay son who died of AIDS, Tommy is receiving criticism from the woke community today regarding his refusal to admit his son's homosexuality.
You have to understand that Tommy was from a different era. He was already well into adulthood when 1950 arrived. His generation was taught to be ashamed of being gay and gay family members. It's hard for younger people to look at Tommy's denial of his gay son's sexuality and understand where that came from.
Tommy was also Italian -- a culture which long had an expectation for men to be macho and traditionally masculine. It was hard for him to reconcile that with his son being both gay and effeminate. Tommy chose to live in denial about the matter. Definitely not the best decision, but understandable given his age and upbringing. This is not the same as a parent in 2021 doing it, when homosexuality is widely accepted and no longer shameful.
I doubt any parent would accept their kid being a bottom privately. Nobody wants that. You can say they would tolerate the behavior just because that is what you have to do in 2021. But there is not a real man in this day that wants his son being drilled as a bottom. No way.
