You could say part of this falls on Citizens United. Because of that there's no corruption on federal level. You had/have safety mechanisms for corporate kleptocracy. Because of Citizens United it has become against politicians best interest to care about accumulation of power/market share.

The big five should have been chopped up long time ago. Anything resembling a cartel should have been investigated and sanctioned.

How it plays now is bipartisan. Koch's got the ball rolling for their own protection and now it's backfiring gloriously. Trump side of GOP are likely the only ones that fail at legal corruption. This was also why i guesstimated that they would be gone around summer. This was before Trump handed establishment all the ammo they needed. Trumps actions made "backstabbing" seem much more organic.

Actually, all else being equal given they have effectively been the minority party for the last 20 years or so, I would say Republicans have been remarkably competent in dominating the political landscape and pushing their agenda during this time.

Given how much the Trump presidency has sabotaged the Republican Party from within, it should actually be of some concern to Democrat supporters they haven't been able to make more political headway as a result.
