My 22 year old son as taken an interest in poker. I’ve never even played with him. Evidently he’s been having some success at 1-2 NL. He’s good college kid. Do I encourage him and help him get better, or stay on the sidelines? Vote “yes, poker is a fun hobby” or “no, one degenerate in the family is enough”

I am in my mid-40s now, and I have a decent net worth with someone with my education and IQ, but there is not a doubt in my mind I'd be worth over $10M now if I had not seen poker on TV in the early 2000s. The whole Moneymaker run has ruined millions of lives because they sprayed those Party Poker commercials all over TV. All of a sudden traditional gambling losers because rock stars, and being in your 20s poker became irresistible. I mean who would not want to sit in a casino 8 hours a day gambling, making thousands and going out and partying at the best restaurants in Las Vegas? Reality when all said and done is you end up going 'camping' for three months like Brad Booth.
98% it's ends up awful for poker pros, 1% can grind out a living, the other 1% get rich. Those are terrible odds. Even the 1% who grind out a living hate their lives.
I know a guy I went to high school with, he went to work for Albertsons right out of high school. He went into their management training program. A lot of people thought he was crazy, and laughed at him behind his back because being a grocer was a joke. Yeah, now is a Senior VP and has millions in stock. Tell your boy to stay away from the tables and avoid the temptation trying to get rich quick. Never works, even if it does there is a 99% the quick $ gets squandered on the next big opportunity.

My nephew is about that age and last holiday he bragged how good he was at poker and that he was gonna make bank doing it. We had a home game that I killed him on and gave him sage advice that gambling is no way to live. Haven’t heard about this career since and he is doing well in college.

First time hearing about baseball in LV.
So I played with my son on Vegas this weekend. 1/3 NLH. For a beginner, he’s the weakest, tightest player I’ve ever seen! Here’s the thing though, he’s 22 and is getting all kinds of action. They simply don’t believe he has the goods. He did call all in a maniac with K high and won, the same guy that cracked his aces with 7-4.
He killed it for about $700. His dad is down $500, but I’d have rather been over at 20/40 limit Hold’em or playing a 2/5 NL deepstack game. It was fun play with him. I cracked his aces with 8-7! I told him to keep doing what he is doing and learn from his mistakes. His style won’t work at 2/5, because players like me will hammer at him all day and give him no action when he plays back, but weak/tight will work at his level.
