was going to get a 13" MBP with the i7... anything else superior to that for the money? not an apple/microsoft fanboy either way, but coming from a 3 year old MBP that's served me fine. just feeling like a new one...

I'm also in favour of getting the best available and taking good care of it so it lasts a long time. I have a 9 year old laptop that cost $3K that's still going strong. Because I got the best memory and processor and etc they could stuff into it at the time, it's still far from obsolete. It's been all over the world a few times over. Heavy as a tank though. I've also never upgraded from Windows 7 Pro because fuck everything that's come out since.
I recently gave a gift of a $400 off the shelf laptop from an electronics store. Much slower than my 9 year old laptop. It was also replaced once already under warranty due to failure of the internal DVD drive.

Really depends what you plan on using laptop for.
Regardless, you should probably just make a decision to go with either mac or non-mac and then go from there without looking back. Macs are more expensive but they're also just better and will last longer. You'll be able to get a much better deal on processor/ram on a non-mac. But really, trying to compare them will suck a lot of time and prob won't make the decision that much easier.

I was a Mac guy forever, and recently made a switch to Dell XPS 15. It's supposed to be among the best business laptops today, I got it with the 1 TB HD and it was like 1950 for the brand new (cheaper for refurbished) after applying the 12% coupon they have on Dell Outlet. I made the change after getting into a huge argument with some Mac store manager, because he wouldn't release my order after his incompetent employee double charged me and wouldn't even provide a confirmation of refund. It's the store in Manhattan Beach, CA and the mother fucker looks like a fire crotch with brown hair and extremely stretched eyes. Just repeated for like an hour that I need to wait for my 4000 to come back on my account because Apple doesn't screw people over like that. Ended up waiting from Friday to Tuesday for the money to show up..
Anyway, I like Dell XPS 15. It's got the touch screen which I don't really use, and with the RAM and HD upgrade it's basically a tank. If you're more into gaming, Alienware might be very reasonable at this price range.
