Grand Canyon helicopter tour out of Vegas crashes, 3 dead -- was PFA Radio listener Alex "Sonny" Lombardo onboard?

A helicopter operated by Papillion, a sightseeing helicopter tour company operating out of Las Vegas, crashed today near the Grand Canyon.

7 people were aboard, 3 of whom died, and 4 were injured. The names of the victims were not released.

Of concern to me is the fact that Alex "Sonny" Lombardo, a PFA Radio listener who also fights scams in poker, may have been onboard. He was best known in 2017 for being one of the main people fighting against shady multi-level-marketing poker site JaoPoker.

Three days ago, Alex posted pictures of himself in a Papillion copter with tourists. He owns his own sightseeing business in Vegas, and often contracts with Papillion to take clients on helicopter tours.

The crash occurred at 4:20pm PST, and it appears Alex posted on Facebook at 5:27pm. However, friends have been unable to reach him tonight.

I'm guessing he wasn't on board, though it's possible that his Facebook post was delayed and auto-posted when his phone got into cell range (such as if it was moved after the crash).

I hope he's okay.

The good news was that Alex Lombardo didn't crash his helicopter.

The bad news? He's been stealing since 1991:




Look how far those go back. And this guy was best known in the late 2010s for calling out poker scams such as JaoPoker. Ouch.

Anyway, I guess the helicopter tourism business wasn't that good in 2019, because he was apparently still stealing.

He got 4-12 years in prison because of his multiple prior convictions.

Alex Lombardo was also friends with one of the guys who robbed Greg Raymer in Bellagio in the 2000s. Lombardo himself had nothing to do with that crime, and when one of the robbers died a few years ago, he claimed the guy was a good dude who just made one stupid mistake. Now you have to wonder what he and Alex had in common.

In Alex's defense, there have never been any accusations against him for scamming or stealing from poker players, so it appears his crimes seem to have been mostly aimed at retail operations and credit card fraud. He's not a young guy (I believe around 60), and is a cancer survivor, so he better hope he gets out of prison in 4 years rather than 12.

He was always nice when I dealt with him, and I never got a scammy vibe from him.
