Oddly, I had a very similar situation occur at McCarran in 2015, minus the meltdown.

I missed a flight on American Airlines out of McCarran (actually they should have gotten me on it, but the gate agents screwed up, but I also got there later than I should have).

They put us on standby.

We waited hours and hours as every flight wasn't able to take us, and we were told we would have to wait the entire rest of the day to find one, which might fail.

I asked if we could just abort and reschedule for the following day, even on standby. They refused. I had to stay there unless I wanted my tickets completely invalidated.

Then a plane had to make an emergency landing due to an engine fire, which put me behind those passengers in standby priority.

Finally they squeezed us onto a flight after first telling me there was no chance it would happen.

Staff at that airport is shitty, at least for American.

But LOL at Osment telling the gate agents that he would destroy them.
