Attention Sanlmar: Zappos is an incredibly stupid company

I know your daughter works or worked there.

I have posted before about how their website is (and has always been) basically a failsite, which is shocking for a successful company which only exists on the web.

For example, they had a longstanding awful bug involving redeeming gift cards, and I repeatedly brought this to their attention. They finally leveled with me years later that "this problem has been submitted repeatedly, but IT basically does what they want, and they rarely fix bugs." I was told this by an exasperated employee who was as frustrated with the situation as I was.

But I've posted all that before.

In 2012, I received about $6000 worth of Zappos gift cards from a promotion at the Cosmopolitan (don't ask). Not needing $6,000 worth of shoes, I've been slowly using them.

When I scratched off the number of the gift cards, they seemed to be long enough to prevent brute force attacks -- 16 digits to be exact, or 10 quadrillion combinations.

However, after scratching a few of them, I noticed that all of the cards had the identical first 10 digits, making them effectively 6-digit cards -- only a million combinations.

So if, hypothetically, there were 10,000 gift cards out there, then you could guess one by simply trying 100 times.

Not surprisingly, I keep finding that some of my gift cards have been "hacked" (likely guessed, not hacked), and have zero balance.

To Zappos' credit, they always make it right for me immediately when I call, but can you imagine how they could have made such a boneheaded mistake?

I won't post the 10-digit string at the beginning, so as to not to empower other would-be thieves, but LOL at the incompetence.

    Fuck that.

    Zappos is god.

I have size 15 feet and shoe buying has always sucked until I started buying Zappos 16 years ago.

if they say it's in stock, it's in stock.

    no hassle free returns.

    fair and often great prices.

best selection of any online shoes.

they have all my shoe business for life.

Zappos is fucking amazing and I wept when they tore down the VIP program.

I notice... you were not part of that VIP program, Druffiel.

Don't get me started about the VIP program.

Yes, I was part of it, though I don't know what criteria they used to determine who was.

Well, a few years ago, you would get free 1-day shipping only as a VIP member. Nice, huh?

    Actually, not so nice.

If you didn't login through the URL vip.zappos.com instead of www.zappos.com, your VIP benefits would be ignored, and it would attempt to charge you for 1-day shipping.

    L O FUCKING L.

    Seriously.

Finally they corrected that, and even put up a note at login that vip.zappos.com was no longer necessary.

Look, the company has great customer service. I'll give them that. They're usually a bit on the pricey side (you can get the same shoes for cheaper elsewhere), but they do cut out a lot of the bullshit by giving free shipping both ways AND a very customer-friendly service model.

But boy... that website is a disaster. And the gift card numbering? I could have been assigned to run the gift card department as a 9-year-old and known not to make that simple mistake.

I didn't say they were a bad company. Just a stupid company.

It must be nice to be able to buy shoes online. My feet/arches are so irregular i gotta try on everything first. I buy various sizes depending on the company/feel of the shoe.

    Druff played this right.

I have posted the fact the kid works for Zappos & is IT. My posts generally revolved around what a great company it is to work for. Generous IT pay and benefits. Free food, health, dental, eye care. They will give the kids the company credit card and tell the dept to go out to eat or see a movie on a particular day.

Zappos gave all employees passes for all three days of the Life Is Beautiful concert that Paddock scouted prior to the sad country music concert.

She and the rest of the tatted & dreaded kids in IT battle the evil Amazon empire that bought them. Pretty much anything you get at Zappos can be found on Amazon - absent the customer service. Tony Hseih's commitment to customer service and the Vegas community still survives the brutal Amazon machine.

Hseih loves Vegas. He has spewed millions (maybe 100's of millions) on the real Vegas. The artists etc. If you love Vegas he has to be supported and regarded as a saint. Somehow Bezos gives Hseih some respect that is hard for me to understand. Employees really don't think it will last.

I've prolly logged in once. That they still do the right thing with CS is great to hear.

I'll see her later today and deliver your charges.

Maybe the bottom line is that in the world of shitty customer service that Druff battles & documents tirelessly - Zappos stands virtually alone. Have them order you a pizza - I'm sure you've heard that story. This CS ought to indemnify them from all criticicism

I was looking at a security role in Zappos IT maybe 3 years ago and honestly it sounded pretty amazing, very competitive rates for LV and I loved the owners commitment to investing in the local creative / startup culture.

I passed ultimately because it didnt feel like they were super organized at a managerial/team leader level particularly in IT, and Druffs complaints about the cards being trivially brute forceable aligns perfectly with those concerns, plus I simply had a more attractive opportunity in front of me that was 100% remote.

But yeah real talk, one can do worse than Zappos as an employer. Like by a lot.

You dodged a bullet on the mgmt side. Amazon is gonna take IT, you know that. They went to some flat, retarded mgmt structure- the euphemism I forget.

You need a jungle guide to survive. She LOVES the people and I guess they like her.

Kid is running a half marathon in Denver this weekend. $120 fee is picked up by Zappos. I could go on and on. Work from home option

It's impossible to explain to her Zappos is not real corporate America. It's like a gambler winning their first bet. She's screwed.

Could be worse. She could end up working our family business. She would rather die in the desert.

I think its very difficult to quantify what 'real corporate America' is in terms of IT landscape in 2017, its all so perverse and extreme, its just all over the place. Even within different segments of IT orgs in Fortune 20 companies, the cultures can be night and day. Point being, Zappos is a lot closer to 'real' corporate IT than you might think, both in terms of positives and negatives.

That said, the further you get from IT the more homogenized culture becomes because most other positions are sales/marketing and are essentially musical chairs games.

yeah almost like you want to congratulate her for finding such an awesome gig and then realize if she ever decides to leave that's she's fucked as far as what to expect from a future employer...tough to get a really great gig right outta college because that's what you think it's about...employee first, great perks, etc...I had a great gig outta college, then my eyes were wide open after working at the evil empire...you realize that there are a bunch of fucking morons out there running businesses who don't have a goddamn clue what the fuck is going on...I still haven't forgot I owe stories BTW...

    Penis,

You prolly were asked to leave because you failed to turn in reports on a timely basis - judging by your performance here.

You sign some non-disclosure/non-compete when they walked you to the exit? Times up.

Start dishing or face the consequences. Dan "Caesars" Druff thinks Zappos has issues? Someone needs to be woke.

Zappos had an interesting employment recruiting tool. They offered everyone who completed their training, 1k if they wanted to leave.

Their thinking was that if 1k could persuade you in switching jobs, then this wasn't a place for you. Also their belief was that this created a great corporate culture, because everyone loved the company/position, not their salary.

IT was told this morning to meet at Hooters Casino.

Bus then collected them and took them to the airport tarmac.

They haven't been told where they are going.

Sure, they could be working on Druff's bugs instead. Maybe headed to Seattle to get the boot from Bezos.
