There is a lot of children suffering in a lot of different places, many much worse than anything going on on our border. I think the point of the cynicism is how the Trump administration and media are going about politicizing this particular issue right now.

If we are really so invested in the suffering of Guatemalan and Salvadorean children, maybe we should be campaigning to intervene militarily in these countries and set up better governments that give a shit about their people so things never get to the point where traveling 6,000 miles to voluntarily go to a prison asylum camp in the US is a bette option than staying at home.

We are the ones causing the pain in this particular case.

Not housing them in cages with emergency blankets would probably be a good start, but outside of that, what can we do?

the problem is we can't do this even if we wanted to. kids can't be detained for more than 20 says under existing federal law.

if the illegal immigrant adults that are arrested plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of crossing the border, they will be released with their families quickly and won't have to be separated.

it's when the adults seek asylum that causes the long-term separation, cause those proceedings take a while. in the meantime, their kids will be put in temporary housing and then foster care. when the adults finally get their hearing, they may be rejected for asylum which could cause a permanent separation.

as one way of fixing this, we need to make it so that kids could be detained for more than 20 days in situations where the adults seek asylum. i think ted cruz is proposing something like this.

truthfully, trump doesn't have the best options available to him at the moment.

Their closest neighboring country is 1600 miles away. I think not a single immigrant boat has ever made it to NZ. Literally doesn't matter what their policy is. They have about 10k illegal immigrants that have all overstayed their visas. Mostly they don't care. Every few years they pick 100-200 in a random sting operation to construction sites. They have about a million legal immigrants.

But it's cool if you guys think that USA should adopt a similar immigrant policy to NZ. Now about 25% of New Zealanders are immigrants. For comparison US has 15%.
