I recently noticed that I stopped giving a fuuUuUuUuck about these weekly Vice news thing and it didnt take long to remind me why; every .. single... one.. is totally one dimensional war porn, novelty medical advancements that somehow are hundreds of years from relevance, or omg the plight of being gay/trans/albino/a sihk boxer/etc.

I really dont even know what they are trying to accomplish at this point. You have to come with amazing aim to throw a rock at the world without hitting an amazing story. Robots. Autonomous weapons. VR. Designer drugs. Cyborg whores. Fags who want to die on Mars. The list is endless and incredible and yet I tune in tonight and its literally footage of human flesh hanging in trees from a rocket strike in a wanna be break away Saudi territory followed by the wacky world of Republicans Who Prefer Not To Do Business With Gays.

The latest masterpiece from VICE is a "tech" article from their Motherboard section:

We Don't Need Cops to Enforce Traffic Laws

What is this article about? It's claiming that speed cameras are the solution to traffic law enforcement.

What?? You mean the speed cameras invented over 20 years ago, which are almost universally hated by drivers? You mean the speed cameras which generate automated citations where there's no way to question the ticket-writer regarding the circumstances under which you were ticketed? You mean the speed cameras which have been long abused by greedy localities, where limits are artificially lowered and the cameras are hidden to write mass tickets?

Yeah, those cameras. The same ones NOT allowed by 37 states, and made explicitly illegal in places like Las Vegas.

So why is this June 2020 "tech" article introducing us to much-reviled 1990s traffic enforcement technology?

Because white privilege.

You see, the author explains that police officers let white drivers off for tickets more often than they do black drivers. He never provides any evidence of this. However, that's the whole premise of the article.

Put up speed cameras everywhere, and suddenly everyone is getting ticketed at very high rates, and we're all equal! Hooray!

(Incidentally, it HAS been proven that women get ticketed at a much lower rate than men when stopped for traffic infractions -- especially women under 40 -- but the article completely ignores that, and instead goes for the unproven racial angle.)

The article does address that people hate speed cameras. However, here's how the author explains why we should put aside our hatred:

“The way I translated that argument is: ‘I need to be able to argue my way out of the ticket,’” said Seo. “That argument is made by people who believe as long as they can get a hold of a human officer with discretion, they can get out of a ticket.”

Tellingly, there is a clear demographic trend among people making this argument. They’re white. In all her research on the subject, Seo said she has never come across a minority group arguing traffic cameras are bad. Police unions also lobby against automation because they say the traffic stop has become a key crimefighting tool in arresting people with guns and drugs, although there are obvious staffing implications as well.

In this way, traffic cameras are emblematic of a wider issue with white privilege; it is hard to get the beneficiaries of that privilege to give it up. As the traffic cops of the early 20th Century found, to enforce traffic laws equally bumps up against the fact that, when behind the wheel, everyone breaks the law.

In all of my years ranting about traffic cameras, never once have I felt that I hated them because I'm white and that allows me to talk officers out of tickets. In fact, I rarely can talk officers out of tickets because I'm male. This is why I choose to just keep quiet during traffic stops, and hope to beat it later via the legal system.

It's also laughable how they assert that black people are for traffic cameras. No, they're not. Black people hate them as much as white people do. In fact, black people who are also poor especially hate them, because they can't afford to pay the (increasingly expensive) tickets, and those cameras write far more tickets than human officers do, since they can work 24/7 and don't require a traffic stop.

Furthermore, the big legal flaw with these cameras is that you can't question them in court. It's not about being able to talk an officer out of the ticket. It's that there's no way to establish that you were speeding for a good reason -- avoiding a drunk driver, getting away from a driver acting in an erratic or threatening manner, or accidentally exceeding the speed limit for a few seconds before correcting it. Officers can assess whether these stories are true, as can a judge when you question the officer in court. A traffic camera cannot. It just clocks your speed at one moment in time, and auto-writes the ticket, recording no other information about the circumstances.

LOL at this idiotic white guilt piece, attempting to encourage proliferation of the two-decade scam known as the traffic camera, which almost 75% states have ruled are a really bad idea.
