Calling anyone that works in poker media a journalist is maybe too strong a word. Nobody is giving anyone at TMZ much less pokernews a putzpuller prize anytime soon. It's entertainment journalism, and those people aspire to be just like the degens they cover.
Who gives a shit? The players decided to do something nice for him in return for all that he does for the poker community. Fuck, if you wanted to get on him for any conflict of interest as a reporter, him being a mod at 4 is more egregious.
Just saying, journalism ethics is pretty serious biz.
He doesn't get paid for it. What's probably the highest of all on the egregious scale is that KevMath had to provide tens of thousands of dollars worth of free labor to Mason Fucking Malmuth before he could land a paid poker gig.Quote:

Funny the UB/AP reference, because all these poker-journo ethics stories lead there. I noticed this Burton crap ran on a domain owned by long-time affiliate Jeremy Enke. I don't have anything against Jeremy, but I do remember that when all the AP cheating evidence broke out he was one of the two or three affiliates fronting the denial messages coming from Peter Barovich and Danielle Burrows. Jeremy even went so far as to write his own op-ed (I think at PAW; I have it archived somewhere) claiming that the accusations about the AP cheating were as truthful and realistic as the moon being made out of green cheese. The dumbest thing about this article is that Kevmath isn't an op-ed writer or an investigative journalist.
He would be the worst one to bribe in the media because it wouldn't get you anywhere. It's not like he's going to be writing puff pieces for people or treating them more easily during some scandal. It's not his job to cover such things.
This was a case of everyone in poker liking him, and wanting to reward him for his dedication -- most of which he does on his own time.

Most people in the poker media are biased and have major conflicts of interest.
Many write or report on poker tournaments because an online poker site is paying them.
Many date or are married to poker pros.
I think Tiffany Michelle was a pokernews reporter when she raised $10k and went deep in the WSOP main event about 6 years ago.
If you work for a "poker magazine" and you write a very positive article about a poker pro who is sponsored by an online poker site, which happens to be a major advertiser for your magazine, how can you call yourself an "independent journalist"?

I followed the link in the article to his book review of The Noble Hustle and at least he's dead on in his negative assessment. What a steaming pile. Last month I ordered it from Amazon to read on the plane to Vegas and after reading about 100 pages I literally left it in the seat pocket of the plane because it wasn't worth carrying around. That's a first for me.

Tony and Jeff bought her in simply to be nice, and all she had to do was wear Pokernews gear throughout the event. This was NOT done because Tiff was expected to make it on TV on run deep, as both were considered unlikely. Well, she luckboxed through most of the field, and them UB came knocking. This was already post-scandal.
She took off the Pokernews clothes and replaced them with UB. Tony claims that he had in fact negotiated a better deal with Pokerstars for her (of which Stars likely was going to give him commission), but she didn't want to hear it. I actually believe him, as she was believing all of the lofty promises from UB and how they would make her a huge star.
Basically Tony's money was good when she needed a buyin but when it came to honoring the commitment to wear the gear, suddenly she forgot who put her there in the first place.
What was Kevmath supposed to say? "Hey, thanks for the $10k gift, but I'm going to have to decline"? It's not like Kevmath was soliciting this. Other players did this all on their own as a 'thank-you' for all Kevmath does for the community.
Poker media and players are essentially one big incestuous family lets be honest. The lines cross back and forth a fair amount. Oddly enough the same can be said of a fair amount of even main stream sports coverage... Years ago the beat reporters were out drinking and smoking with the guys they covered back in the day (Im sure Son of Lockman can verify this with his plethora of knowledge. Nowadays as print media has faded and sports are covered nearly around the clock primarily in TV and online format along with the draw of former players into the new sports reporting model as color commentators and to offer "the jocks/former jocks perspective" Id dare say if anything its probably gotten worse as many teams have hired former players from their teams to be local media and announcers/color and the true national media of sports journalism itself has gone down hill significantly in quality. (Hey Hockey guy you can verify this but isn't EJ Hradek one of the most hated hockey analysts on ESPN and nationwide).Quote:
