He'll only get expelled if the disabled student was BIPOC. Otherwise, a strong reprimand for Briere and a new chair for the victim. If the victim was a trans woman, then the father loses his job as well.

This is obviously a shitty thing to do and kid deserves to be punished, but why is this even a story? I certainly did worse things in my youth that I’m not proud of and thankful social media didn’t exist back then.

After that, I'd run downstairs right after him and start stomping his face until people pulled me off. Paying for a new wheelchair would seem like a bargain compared to reconstructive surgery.

He's not going to be the one to pay for anything, unless Daddy decides to cut his allowance.

I also don't think his life is ruined. His hockey career certainly isn't, at least, provided he is talented enough that a team considers the ten minutes of bad publicity in signing him worth it.

If not, the Internet both always remembers and also has a pretty short memory. Most people won't even know his name in three days. Any prospective employer that doesn't do a Google search won't know and half of the ones who do won't care. The kid's life is far from over, imo.

Again, assuming that the young lady in question is aware of the GoFundMe, then it is for her to report any abuses of those funds (such as her not getting them) should she choose to do so. Unless and until, I don't think it's necessary that her identity be made public as she should certainly not have to suffer any further undue humiliation as a result of an event that wasn't at all her fault.

Apparently these wheelchairs are expensive and not all that quick to replace. The wheelchair belonged to a female student. The bathroom was at the bottom of the stairs, so someone had to carry her down the stairs and back up in order for her to go to the bathroom.

It is unclear whether Carson and his buddy knew whose wheelchair it was, or if they just thought it would be LOL to push it.

It's possible both were very drunk when this occurred, but their mannerisms don't appear like those of super-drunk people.

Yes, it would be much much worse if the person was in the wheelchair, where then Carson could be facing an attempted murder charge, and would almost certainly get several years in prison.

This was more of needless destruction of an essential mobility tool for a disabled person, and obviously it's much worse than just vandalizing some random person's car. This girl now won't be able to get around until she gets another chair. There's just a certain meanness and shittiness to do something like this to a disabled person, especially once you're over 21 years old and should know better.

This Carson kid is apparently really stupid/reckless, because he was already on thin ice after getting a "second chance" with this school, and now he fucked that up, too. Looks like rich daddy will be paying his bills for a long time.

I met Danny Briere years ago when he played for Buffalo and he was a nice guy to the fans. Clearly, that didn’t rub off on his son!

So, I get that college kids are dumb and want to be where the "cool" party is and all that, but that sure seems like a horrible club to go to for someone in a wheelchair. I'm not an expert on ADA compliance, but that doesnt seem compliant.

Thread also made me realize I had no idea where Mercyhurst was. Only ever heard of it because of hockey, and just assumed it was in Mass. or CT. for whatever reason. Sounded right in my head. Erie, PA actually. Actually makes this story make more sense now.

I certainly wouldn't want to trust my friends, who are clubbing, to carry me down a flight of stairs every time I have to piss, but that seems immaterial to him just chucking the wheelchair down the stairs.

I don't know what applicable ADA guidelines would apply to that particular club. Two possibilities are that it wouldn't be required for that sort of establishment in the first place, or, even if required, the establishment could have existed prior to 1991 and would fall under, "Safe Harbor," thereby not requiring it to make the modifications pursuant to the 2010 ADA guidelines.
