If I can't go grab a beer after work where there's actual women in attendance, I'm on the clock 24/7 in my mind.

After a month or two he likely has significant time off. As great as union is they are not going to likely allow him to work much more than 2000 hours per year unless he gets a side job (which he very well may have).

The fact that he doesn't have a home or any real expenses makes significant time away from shore even that more desirable. He should have significant money saved after a year of doing this.
