Downloaded the torrent ... extremely underwhelmed given all the hype. I haven't read the books but vaguely knew what it was about. I liked some things ... the desert planet Arrakis looks great and there was a real sense of scale with the outdoor scenes. Many things made little sense though ... a civilization which possesses interstellar travel and anti-gravity technology which can suspend space-ships is still settling disputes by hand-to-hand fighting? And can't eradicate sand-worms from their fabulously valuable mining operations? No-one puts in a bad performance but Rebecca Ferguson stands out as a great actress. Everyone else ... meh.
FWIW, the movie doesn't go into this, but this universe is set in a post apocalyptic future after humans went to war with AI (Terminator style), and ultimately won, but had to start over with AI prohibited. Also, noone uses guns because the guns they have (lasers) create nuclear explosions when they hit the shields. I don't remember all the details, but there are strict rules to warfare, which the Harkonnens and Emperor (who hasn't even been introduced yet, but is a major character) broke a lot of when they attacked the Atreides, which is one of the reasons the Baron has to make sure no Atreides lives to tell the tale.Quote:

I watched this last night, and the entire first act and about 60% of the second act is just a cluster fuck and basically unwatchable. That being said, the story does even out and finish pretty strongly. The biggest problem with this movie is the casting of the main character - Hollyweird once again casts an effeminate, basically tranny to star in a movie as a supposed leader of men (or in general leading man), this wouldn't be quite as bad if the androgynous dweeb was actually believable as a leading man in any capacity or had an acting range beyond looking concerned and vulnerable. It's such a miscasting that I don't think I'd watch the sequel under any circumstances. I know the character is supposed to be young etc., but that doesn't mean 5'8", 110lbs and OSA masturbation material. I think the movie he is most known for is the adaptation of a gay love story novel, Call Me By Your Name. No one can question this nonsense without being labeled homophobic. Hollywood is dying, can't help but wonder why.

I'll admit that I never read the book.
I saw the 1984 movie, which turned me off to Dune. It was boring and confusing. I tried to understand and like it, but it simply made no sense.
My friend I saw it with agreed.
I saw a TON of moves at that point of my life (I was 12 in 1984), and Dune was one of the least entertaining and hardest to understand. At the time I chalked it up to being a 12-year-old and the movie being over my head.
Much later, as an adult, I looked up reviews online, and noticed that intelligent 1984 adults, such as Roger Ebert, also had the same reaction to it that I did. And apparently if you didn't read the book beforehand, you were lost, which is a huge no-no when making a movie.
David Lynch, who made the film, was so ashamed of it that he took his name off it.

didnt hate it. but it seemed to sacrifice a lot of the depth of the world and the characters.
everyone was simply much more interesting in the books, especially the emperor and feyd. the BBC dune adaptation really got feyd right, especially his relationship with vladimir.
but like, where is the spacing guild in all this? in the book, representatives of the guild are present with the emperor during the final showdown. and thats an incredibly important point because when paul threatens to obliterate the spice, the guild (through their spicey powers) recognize the truth of the threat. this basically explains how the means for a galactic jihad become available to paul.
anyway whatever. it could have been much, much worse. they started preproduction on dune messiah which is promising i guess.. better than leaving the story as is i suppose.
The 1984 movie was bad, but when I watched it over and over again, I liked it. I saw it on acid one time, too, and it was good.
The new one, much more faithful to the book. I took my middle daughter to it because she likes Tim Chalofee, who is nice on the eyes, and she kept asking me what was happening,
Because even with a long movie, it makes not much sense unless you know what's going on.
Haven't see 2, yet, but I'd watch it on Netflix or something.

This book in movie form is just shoving one space magic concept after the next with no real foreshadowing. Its not nearly as complicated as it pretends to be but it comes off as one Deus ex machina after the next.

Im 99% sure it makes a lot more sense in the book. People talk about the story with such reverence Im perfectly willing to believe it. I just think it made for a shitty movie adaptation
I saw most of Dune 2 on a plane ride recently. It was really dark (like cinemotagraphy) and mumbled dialogue. Didn't make it through it.
Also, I don't like going to the beach unless I can shower right after because the sand gets everywhere, and this reminded me of that so was uncomfortable.

by the by theres a BBC scifi series that captures this all pretty well so the notion that no ones come close to doing it (which i see bandied about a lot) is kinda ill informed.
Apparently the only purpose of making Dune 2 was so they could make Dune 3 (and more money of course). The whole movie was filler. Dune 1 was pretty good though.
