I think they should be paid a small amount roughly equivalent to what an average college student would making working part-time while going to school full-time. Obviously there is no way they can get get a job with school/sports taking up all of their time.

You guys are missing the most critical question that needs to be answered. If the main question was how much do we pay them someone could step forward with a plan and trial and error it over the next ten years. But that's not the question. The real issue is once you start paying these guys you are admiting that they are a de facto employee. The problem question that needs to be answered is where does the liability end for the school?
You get that question answered and the NCAA falls tomorrow. The problem is it's the question wants to answer because it's a mountan of liability for the schools they would be taking on.

Do they even necessarily have to pay them? Sure that would be ideal, but wouldn't most players be satisfied with a system where they can get something like workman's comp if they're injured and the ability to attend school for free even if they get injured?
Also, they should be free to get whatever endorsements they like or play in any pro sports that they would want on the side. For example a while ago there was a QB in the NCAA that was a professional snowboarder and that obviously became an issue. Why should this remain an issue?
This way you don't have to worry about schools giving ridiculous perks to the top athletes and can remain competitive but still give the players rights.

The talk is that the NBA might finally be done with the embarrassment of being associated with the NCAA. Just ship the top high school prospects to D League or an NBA academy. Kids get their money at 18.

By way of example, the really elite high school baseball kids are drafted to the MLB minor leagues. Think Kershaw. No college. I have a feeling the basketball progression is going to be this.
The allusion to 80’s & 90’s was thought provoking in this context. I remember the Michigan Fab Five. None of those kids would play College in my new model. Their talent was clear and the NBA would draft out of high school.
If you saw the 30 for 30 piece you learned how pissed the Fab Five were about not being able to afford the merch the schools and sneaker companies were banking off their brand. They all said, “fuck the NCAA” and became the godfathers of the early bounce.
