The way I understand it from a post of someone listening to the police broadcast is that a black guy ran from a robbery elsewhere onto the MIT campus and it simply happened there.

These two obviously are sophisticated. It would seem normal these two would not stay around Boston after this.
The Canadian border via Vermont, Upstate NY, all Canadian entry points, would be my first guess. One would just hope they did not already get across. They know better than to use airports.
