Social Engineering is mostly ways of getting someone else to do something you want that and the whole interaction is a net negative for the other person, so manipulation. Are you saying those good at compsi skew towards those also good at manipulation? poker too , its all similar

I don’t really recall social engineering being a used term before computers. No one said I social engineered some blonde last night after a few drinks.
I would guess Druff comes from that phone freak world, but any tech people, they know how the system works therefore they know what to extract.
It’s not just manipulating the information out of someone. It’s knowing what to do with it. Plus they tend to do it more so practice doesn’t hurt.
fwiw the origin of social engineering as a threat vector in the popular lexicon can be traced back to the late kevin mitnick. spies/conmen have been socially engineering for malicious purposes for as long as there have been lies, but kevin was the first to leverage it for computer crime to any serious effect. and since computers underpin our whole fucking lives lately, social engineering has a correspondingly high body count. its by far the easiest and most reliably gateway for cybercrime.
