Does being a guy and sucking dick constitute as a mental illness to you as well? I feel like it's the same argument. You think that a man feeling like a woman is unnatural or a a disease... being gay used to be considered a disease as well 40 years ago..... so why is it that if someone's gender identity does not match what you deem normal it is a mental disorder?

while i agree with much of what you're saying, this rationale -- that we can't suggest that there is any correlation between being transgender and mental illness -- is the reason that it's legal for children to mutilate themselves in a lot of states. it's simply not acceptable in modern society to question whether this correlation exists.Quote:

I'd like to see the suicide rates way back when after a gay man came or was forced out of the closet. I bet if society started showing similar tolerance towards transgenders as they now do for gays, then those higher post-op suicide rates would fall dramatically.
I believe it's a stigma problem more than a mental one.
That said. There was a pre-op trans guy from Canada on GMB hosted by Piers Morgan who refused to identify his small child as either a boy or girl.
Said the child would remain "gender neutral" until 'its' old enough to decide what sex it wants to be lol

You are changing the question. The question is about whether living with a gender identity issue is a mental illness. You haven't said why you think it's a mental illness other than to say that transgender people have a much higher rate of suicide. I then provide a simple reasoning for that. They grow up confused because they are different and mercilessly picked on by both peers and authority figures. They are made to feel small by everyone in society. Would you agree that would make someone much more likely to have mental issues? You are trying to imply that having a gender identity crises in it of itself causes you to be mentally ill and want to kill yourself...Quote:

also, the difference in suicide rate between pre-op and post-op trans is not as great as you would think.

To be honest I've got tolerance issues of my own.
I can fully tolerate Blakes opinion on the subject. Because it's just that - an opinion.
What I can't tolerate are peoples negative views on the subject because of shit they've read in the bible.
Those are the people we need to be stigmatising. Which probably equates to around 65% of this hillbilly/redneck forum.
Every scientist in the world can look at your DNA and tell you your gender or ethnicity.
So if you're going to argue with something that definitive, I think it's fair to question why. You can presume, but that's not scientific. If you start to muddy what's science and what's not, you help those who want to obfuscate climate science and other real science for their own purposes.
Stigmatizing anything is idiotic, whether it be mental illness or real. Either way the person deserves compassion. If I had to bet on it, I'd put transgender being a naturally occurring phenomena as a 60/40 favorite over mental illness, but 60/40 is gut feeling territory, it's not science.
That's entirely different than sexual preference where science can't look at your DNA and guess with any reliable accuracy.
That religious zealots treated them in a similar stigmatizing manner in the past is irrelevant. Your gender is hard wired into the very fabric of who you are in almost all. Who you like to sex isn't in any verifiable manner as far as I'm aware.

No, having the debate is a good thing. I believe it would eventually lead to greater tolerance for trans if the debate was held openly without fear of being labelled a transphobe or w/e.

Discrimination among other reasons have been shown to have an effect in mental well being. Also in this case less discrimination is better, just in case you were confused how it works.
No one is saying you should get a pass from anything regarding mental or physical health while enlisting/serving just because you're transgender.
It's weird for me that this ban is even legal.
