David Price told reporters Wednesday that he will not opt out of the final four years of his seven-year deal with the Red Sox.
Price is owed $127 million for the next four years, so it's been assumed for a long time now that he'd be staying put. Price went 16-7 with a 3.58 ERA this past season before his hero turn in the World Series.

but could he seriously be thinking why the fuck should i walk away from over $60m for 2 years by wanting more money....lol..?

Kershaw's agent is probably furiously trying to figure out which will land him more money -- a long term deal on the open market, or the $70m for the next 2 years plus whatever extension the Dodgers will give him, plus whatever he can manage after that.

He might also lose a little bit of endorsement value by jumping teams at this point, but he never hit the endorsement circuit too heavy, so that probably isn't much of a factor.

A year ago this would have been a no-brainer to opt out, but now there may not be teams willing to commit big money to him long term, given his declining velocity, injury problems, and repeated postseason fail.

My guess is that he wants the Dodgers to extend him another $25m per year for 3 years beyond the current contract (5 total), making him 35 when that's all over.

Dodgers probably want to do something like 2 years, $20m each.

The question is if a team like the Yankees will say "fuck it" and just overpay in order to score him and bolster the team even further. They couldn't be too happy about falling short twice in a row in the AL playoffs.

It’s just stating the obvious but

What an enormous swing that last game of the World Series was for him. Maybe the biggest swing ever in sports? I mean it was Kershaw and his myth and it was the World Series. That’s pretty big stuff.

No matter what people say about nerds and analytics - recency is how people make decisions.

If in some alternate universe Kershaw won - all would have been forgiven. The Hamilton guy would be writing a Broadway play about Kershaw.

I have come to like Kershaw the man. He’s a church going, simple and sincere guy. He has stood tall and owned up to not pitching well. Classy.

He has small kids about to enter school. There is no way he wants to raise them in LA.

There are moments I feel bad about kicking him around the block. It’s just that he and the team he plays for are so monumentally over rated. People are idiots. I am morally bound to take the other side. It happens to pay well too. Just a fringe benefit.

You just seem to enjoy hating the Dodgers.

For some reason it didn't bother you when an 87-win, mediocre Giants team won the World Series in 2014, because Madison Bumgarner was super hot and carried them.

But whenever the Dodgers have any kind of success, you add some qualifier.

"They play in a slap-nut division"

    "They aren't winning championships."

"They're spending so much money, of course they're having some success."

"The AL teams are far superior."

The bottom line is that the Dodgers have been a very successful franchise over the past 13 seasons.

9 playoff appearances. 8 division titles. 6 NLCS appearances (including 3 straight recently). Two consecutive World Series appearances.

They came a game away from beating a very tough Houston team, and lost to an excellent Red Sox team which was destroying everyone.

They were under the salary cap coming into 2018, even with junk contracts like Kemp's on the books.

They deserve props for all of these accomplishments.

Unfortunately, they haven't ever been a great team, aside from some improbable mid-late season runs where they went 43-7 and 42-8 in 2013 and 2017. They've just been good to very good every year, and it's never quite enough to win it all.

Regarding Kershaw, he was astoundingly good for 10 years. Now he's entering a second phase of his career when he will just be good, but no longer a pitcher you fear facing.

As you said, he is a good Christian boy who doesn't cause problems off the field, is married to the girl he dated in high school, gives to charity because his heart really is in it (as opposed to just PR reasons), and probably doesn't even cheat on his wife.

His personality is a bit boring, so he isn't as marketable as he could have been, but that boring personality also is what makes him a quality guy off the field.

Unfortunately, he does have a bit of a temper, and he gets his mind worked up too easily, so he's not particularly good in the clutch. That's what's caused him to struggle in the postseason. That probably won't ever change.

While this hasn't been officially announced, the Dodgers extended a $17.9 qualifying offer to Yasmani Grandal.

If he accepts it, they will have to pay him that for 2019. If he refuses it, then any team signing him as a free agent will owe the Dodgers a draft pick.

The Dodgers attempted this gamble with Brett Anderson a few years ago, for $15 million, and lost when he accepted it, and then he proceeded to pitch terribly.

Personally I think they're better off just letting him go, instead of trying to gamble on getting a draft pick (hoping he rejects the offer).

He definitely isn't worth $18m, even if it's just 1 year.

Dodgers have two decent catchers in their farm system, though I haven't checked recently if either of them will be ready for MLB in 2019.

They re-upped with Freese for 1 year, for $4.5 million. They did this plus a $500,000 buyout rather than give him his $6 million option, so they saved $1 million. Good signing for them. He's not productive enough to play 1B every day for a contending team, but he's great for spot starting, pinch hitting, and the postseason.

He will be 36 in 2019, but given his strong finish to 2018, I'm guessing he'll be roughly the same player he was this year.

David price is offended by the three year extension.

Dodger Qual Offer to both Grandal & Ryu...if either was wanted really big time a new contract would be drawn up---both players probably want multi-year deals which they figure to get as free agents but the Dodgers are reluctant to give...so QO and salvage some value

So I haven't checked tonight, but at about 1:30pm today, 30 minutes after the deadline for Kershaw, I checked my phone.

Reports stated that he signed a 3-year, $93m extension with the Dodgers.

    Okay.

So I thought, "What does this mean? He had 2 years left, so does that mean he's under contract for 5 years now? Or does the 3 years replace the two he had left?"

Not a single fucking news outlet clarified this, including all the major ones.

My inclination is to believe that this makes his contract 5 years, but I'm not sure.

Really dreadful how bad journalism has gotten. That's a pretty huge detail to omit.

If the 3-year deal is replacing the remaining 2 years, then the Dodgers are paying something like $25m to add an extra year, which isn't terrible.

If it's adding to the existing 2 years, then it's terrible, as he will be getting $31m average for 3 more years when he'll likely be in further decline.

So I'd love to know the truth here.

    Okay, ESPN finally clarified it:

Kershaw and the Dodgers negotiated a one-year extension beyond the two years that were remaining on his contract; he is owed $93 million over the next three seasons.
    http://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/stor...es-dodger-life

This wasn't there earlier when I checked at 1:30pm.

Anyway, that's not bad. They're basically keeping his existing contract and tacking on one more year at $25m or so.

So I’m watching Brady v Rodgers. The inevitable comparisons.

Remember Montana v Marino? If you’re 20’ish you may not have heard of Marino. That’s ok.

Dan Marino with the golden arm and all the stats. Not a champion. Hall of Fame though. Lotta fun if you lived in Miami.

    Clayton Kershaw is baseball’s Marino.

    Enjoy the game.

Except Marino never choked. He just never had enough talent around him before his knees got so bad he lost his mobility to do anything other than quickly fire from the pocket.

Kershaw is better than Jack Morris too.

But I would rather Jacks championship rings.

Regular season means a lot less to me.
