The payment was ignored for 37 years, and there was no urgency to pay it. It could have been ignored for another 37 years without any consequence.
I'm not even bothered that it was eventually paid. I was bothered by the fact that Obama was so naive that he tied the release of the hostages to it, so as to give the obvious optics of being a pay-for-release-of-hostages situation.
Iran even predictably postured about it right afterwards, telling their people that they stood strong against the US, took hostages, and got paid a ransom equivalent to what has been owed since 1979. It looked like a huge victory to the Iranian people, and a win for terrorism.
Obama wasn't even aware enough to have the hostage release occur BEFORE the $400m payment, or at least get the Iranian leaders to announce beforehand that this isn't a ransom, and that they are releasing the American hostages in good faith as appreciation for Obama paying that 37-year-old debt.
Instead that chump just handed them $400m, got the hostages back the same day, and Iran's leaders clowned Obama hard in their state run media.
Obama is a smart guy, but he was really a naive buffoon sometimes when it came to foreign policy. This was a great example.
I hate when I get sued for liable.

I agree the optics were bad, but "Obama paid Iran $400m!!!!" is completely misleading so you should stop saying it.

This is where our political tribal mindset betrays us. The right leaning folks here have plenty of other shit to hammer Obama on. He’s the last guy to be calling weak on foreign policy. That guy dropped more bombs per day than any other president in history times a factor of 5. Clinton wasn’t bad either. Nobody would
Confuse either one with the Bush family but all and all it hasn’t been so bad. Carter on the other hand is a complete fucking disgrace to the office. Drives me crazy that they end the movie Argo (which was a good movie/story) on January 20th 1980 like nothing else happened that day to end the hostage crisis.
Uh ohz trump says we are locked and loaded after assault on Saudi Oil
