Hellmuth raked by pros over Charging WSOP Investors 1.8 Markup

The Poker Brat posted an ad on YouStake, a poker staking platform, seeking a 30 percent investment in Event #2, $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em Super Turbo Bounty. Poker staking is common especially at the high stakes levels, but Hellmuth’s approach has many questioning his character and intelligence.

Hellmuth is asking for a 1.8 markup from investors on YouStake, which means a $1,000 investment, for example, would cost the buyer $1,800 (18 percent of $10,000) while only returning 10 percent of Phil’s payout if he cashes.

Hellmuth has gotten futher shit over the turbo event from various players on twitter as he (as always) showed up fashionably late, blinding off 25% of his stack, then immediately gave up another 60k to Steffen Sontheimer, then call/folded down to 10bb when he was busted out by Reinker Kempe. Of course, all of this was followed by a Hellmuth rant where he said these weren't even the best players, talked crap on the Germans, the best players don't travel the world to play high rollers, called them a fraternity where "these guys play for very little of themselves", and finished with "he was playing at the highest level".

The markup discussion was always a big debate in the poker scene, but this was the first one in a while where people flipped their shit over it, especially after Hellmuth's less than optimal play today. Also LOL to any investor who pays that, but to each his own

It's definitely a ripoff to be charging 1.8 markup in a 10k buying super turbo event but if people are willing to pay it just to have a piece of the brat then you can't knock the hustle and you can't fix stupid.

Hellmuth sold all of his 30% at 1.8 markup so like Canada Bill Jones said "It's immoral to let a sucker keep his money".

I'm of both minds on this..

I totally understand druff putting a nominal mark up to contribute towards food and lodgings ect.. otherwise he is actually he would be cheating himself..

Helmuth did do the dirty thing.. but if people are willing to pay a "premium" just to say that "he" is there horse, WHY NOT?!?

Hellmuth is now getting shit for revealing the strength of his hand at the WSOP feature table (and of course, the usual douchebaggery)

other pros have complained that he does this all the time, and that tourney directors don't do anything about it

Hellmuth's response about the incident is here

Did he ever just admit he was wrong ? Or actually apologize? I noticed that he frames his tweet as being a good guy because of the respect for policemen and firefighters. Lol. What a snake this guy is. Hopefully he actually has some actual class in other tweets not posted.............

I agree about his talking about his hands in multiway pots and so on.

As for the markup, people paid it. Is he supposed to charge less than what the market will bare? People are complaining about what he was charging in the $10K turbo, but he won the $5K turbo. So maybe 1.8 wasn't that far out of line.
