Jury awards Wynn $20 million in slander case

    Anthony McCartney, Associated Press
    Published Monday, Sept. 10, 2012 | 12:05 p.m.

A jury on Monday awarded casino mogul Steve Wynn $20 million in his slander case against "Girls Gone Wild" founder Joe Francis, who claimed the creator of some of Las Vegas' most upscale resorts threatened to kill him over a gambling debt.

Witnesses disputed Francis' claims during a four-day trial, including Grammy winning record producer Quincy Jones, who Francis said told him about Wynn's threats and showed him a stack of emails that contained them.

    Wynn vehemently denied that.

Steve Wynn is a class guy. I think he is in the right here, especially given the character of Joe Francis.

BTW, Steve Wynn actually refused to take the action of megawhale Terry Watanabe, who enriched Harrah's with $204 million in gambling winnings and accounted for 5.6% of their revenue that year. Wynn met with Watanabe, decided that he was a problem gambler, and barred him from the property. He gave up hundreds of millions in likely winnings and let Harrah's have Watanabe's action.

That's a good guy in my book.

i agree with all that you said, but i would like to point something out for you. in this article http://todayentertainment.today.com/...nder-case?lite it was expressed that "Wynn's attorney on Friday had asked the panel to award the billionaire $12 million plus punitive damages to send a message that false statements that travel far in the Internet age will not be tolerated." which confuses me a little bit. Do you or anyone know if his claims were on the internet first? If that is true then slander could include web based statements.

    that is all

He said it in a courtroom the first time. The internet comment is about how news spreads faster than ever via the internet.

"He said he “strongly believed” his life was in danger when he first mentioned the alleged Wynn threat during a court proceeding involving a Los Angeles Superior Court judge."

I was happy to hear that.

Joe Francis just seems like a detestable person.

Steve Wynn's life story is remarkable. Although his parents were well off (Dad was in the Bingo business believe it or not), Steve earned uber success on his own. Good grief, his wife became a billionaire just by divorcing him.

Wynn led the Las Vegas renaissance during the 1990's and recently has had great success in Macau.

Do I think Steve Wynn threatened to kill Joe Francis over a $2 million gambling debt? No, I agree with the jury.

However, Wynn is old school. He's smart and tough as nails.

Below he talks about the time his daughter was kidnapped for a $1.4 million ransom. At the 10:50 mark of the video he tells the interviewer, "the cops got him before we did". It begs the question, what would Steve Wynn have done if he had grabbed the kidnapper before the FBI did?

LOL Joe Francis go sell some more dvds you had no chance in hell of winning versus a guy with the money Wynn has to fuck up your universe.

This is exactly the same as Druff vs Marty, but on a "slightly" larger scale.
