    All about the mindset

If somebody told you that your kid/wife will die if you fail, then it gets done easily.

Would hope that he's seeing a shrink before going in and can imagine the shrink tells him something similar.

    Ez money
It's actually a bathroom. Not sure where, but that explains how there's a shower and bathtub in there.

About a decade ago, some guy made a bet, also at Bellagio, regarding living in a bathroom for 30 days. But he was allowed to do it with the lights on, and didn't have nearly as many restrictions.

I believe that this bet will be closely monitored, and he will automatically lose if shenanigans go on.

I definitely would never have taken this bet, even if it paid a lot more than $100k. You only get one brain.
That was Brian Zembic -- same guy who had fake boobs put in and had to keep them in for at least a year. After a year, he said fuck it, I like them, and kept them.

I don't think the bathroom bet was for $100k, though. But IIRC, he went into it knowing there was going to be a big bridge (or backgammon?) tournament coming up like 5-10 after he had to start the bathroom bet, assuming that his friends would buy him out of the bathroom bet so they could go play in the tournament....and that's exactly what happened. At least that's how he described it (I think?) in an interview I think on GWAE.

He's done several crazy bets like that.

This would be a very easy bet for me to win and, in some ways, an idyllic existence. Thirty days of peace and quiet with time to think would be blissful.

Maybe read a couple of the posts in the thread. Or at least the first one.

    Got a little more info.

Today is Day 18. Started on November 22.

His family is aware of the bet and begged him not to do it. They are "very worried" about him.

Unsure here, but watching your avatar for more than 5 seconds is worse than 18 days in the bathroom. Well done

According to some bullshit question on quora.com (example given is 1 year not 30 days) that your brain/muscle/eyes may "forget" how to do whatever the opposite is of eye dilation. It's probably #FakeNews, but that is an interesting aspect to it I didn't really think of. What if he comes out of the room and his eyes just stay dilated forever? Don't think it's likely.

Also, depends on how dark the room actually is, since it's pretty tough to eliminate every possible light source. I reckon even a tiny little crack that would let in a tiny bit of light, would be enough (after adjusting) to be able to see.

Surprised he made it this long.

I thought perhaps this would be one of those prop bets where the person bails out after a very short time and realizes it's impossible.

Remember the LOL $1000 McDonalds food bet?

The sad thing here is that $100k isn't even that much money. It's worth just $69k back when I started playing poker in January 2001!

It's not even close to life-changing money. At best, it gives the guy a bankroll to play mid-stakes poker without having to worry about losing the rent money. But this clearly isn't worth it, given the risks and the torturous month he will go through.

A million dollars? Okay, at least that can make a real impact, and if smartly budgeted, you can live well for a long time on that.

    But $100k? GTFO

There are some accusations that this was manipulated in some way, perhaps just proposed on the day the bet ended, to win people's money on sidebets and then split the proceeds.

There is some belief that there were additional sidebets made with both sides, and that the sidebets were clear that the full 30 days had to pass. Some suspect that by ending it at this point for this (supposed) buyout, the "can't make it 30 days" side wins. If there were substantially more sidebets on "can make it 30 days", they could split the profits after paying off the winning side.

One reason for this belief is because of the odd buyout figure of $62,400, which is not pro-rated to the number of days left, nor is it rounded to the thousand or 500. Some suspect that this was the exact figure needed in order for both to walk away with the same amount of money after the sidebets.

Example (I'm making these numbers up):

Alati had sidebets $37,600 that he will make it all 30 days (he gets paid if he does)
Young had sidebets $87,200 that Alati won't make it all 30 days (he gets paid if Alati doesn't)

    Young wins $87,200 in sidebets
    Alati loses $37,600 in sidebets
Young gives $62,400 to Alati as a settlement

    Young: $87,200 - $62,400 = $24,800 ahead
    Alati: $62,400 - $37,600 = $24,800 ahead

ONCE AGAIN, I HAVE NO EVIDENCE OF ANY OF THIS. However, this has been suggested to me by some very skeptical people.

I think the full details of any sidebets should be revealed.

Actually that figure seems very close to it being pro-rated based on time. Without knowing the exact time the bet began or ended, that figure would count for 18 days, 17 hours, and 50 minutes or so.

For all we know it was a settlement based on how long Alati thought he had been in there or thought he had left.
It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?
