But tipping the barber who owns the place is stupid, for obvious reasons. Unfortunately, it's now expected, so you're looked at like an asshole if you don't.
Reminds me of private tours on Caribbean islands. Even though they are owner-operated, the tour guide gets irritated if you don't tip him at the end, even though you originally negotiated a price to begin with!
The whole tipping culture basically sucks. Europe has that part right. Employees should just be paid what they're worth to the business, and tipping should cease entirely.
Tipping culture in the US has gotten out of hand to where you're expected to tip nearly everyone for everything, and there are constant new angles for tips (even the cashier at counters of takeout places).
It's also very inequitable. There are people who will judge you if you only tip the valet $1 or your server 18%, yet those same people will walk by janitors mopping the floor for minimum wage and never hand them a penny.
I also love the excuse of, "Well, servers work for less than minimum wage, so you have to tip them well so they can make a living."
That's true if they are working at a cheapo low-end restaurant, but not at a prime steakhouse. Some of those servers are taking home more pay than you are. The hourly wage is irrelevant. All that matters is what the person actually makes per year, which for some servers, valets, and other tipped positions is quite high (and more than they're worth, given their skillset and difficulty of work).
