    Haircut thread: Price Change

I have been going to the same barber shop for like 7 years, there are 5 barbers but only 2 have ever stuck long term. The "Owner" and the guy I go to are the ones that seem to last. I put Owner in " " because the other barbers pay a seat charge so without the seat charges the "Owner" cannot pay rent. I guess he gets the final decisions on things but it's not like he is some CEO. It's a collective effort.

So like 7 years ago the haircut cost was $12, and everyone always gave $15 with tip. Then all of a sudden the price jumped to $15, which was ok since you just gave the guy a $20. I always felt $12 was too low, so giving a solid $20 was ok in my book.

Now, they just raised priced again which is fine as that is part of life. But instead of raising it to $17 it was raised to $20. They did this for a reason. If they raised it to $17 everyone would still give a $20 bill. But by raising it to $20 you have to go over with the tip.

So I gave my barber $22 under protest, not $25. I asked him why they raised it 1/3rd and he took the easy way out saying it was the "Owner" decision of course he was not there.

$25 is too much for a men's haircut, since they take like 10 minutes. This is not a salon where you get a wash and a blow dry.

    Great thread.

Just took an Explorer into Ford.

I bought a Dunkin Donuts gift card - addressed it to the mechanic and left it on the instrument cluster

With service rates these days, a tip makes a microscopic difference to your final cost.

When I picked up the car the mechanic must have seen it being moved. He came out to thank me. That was good of him.

Next time I get car done gonna ask for same mechanic. They leave the name on the service slip.

Firm believer in taking care of your contractors and tipping service people. No matter how small.

Wondering how much other barbers in that area of similar reputation now charge. Have you shopped around?

Tipping of barbers occurs because many barbers rent their stations where they work, and otherwise make relatively little money.

But tipping the barber who owns the place is stupid, for obvious reasons. Unfortunately, it's now expected, so you're looked at like an asshole if you don't.

Reminds me of private tours on Caribbean islands. Even though they are owner-operated, the tour guide gets irritated if you don't tip him at the end, even though you originally negotiated a price to begin with!

The whole tipping culture basically sucks. Europe has that part right. Employees should just be paid what they're worth to the business, and tipping should cease entirely.

Tipping culture in the US has gotten out of hand to where you're expected to tip nearly everyone for everything, and there are constant new angles for tips (even the cashier at counters of takeout places).

It's also very inequitable. There are people who will judge you if you only tip the valet $1 or your server 18%, yet those same people will walk by janitors mopping the floor for minimum wage and never hand them a penny.

I also love the excuse of, "Well, servers work for less than minimum wage, so you have to tip them well so they can make a living."

That's true if they are working at a cheapo low-end restaurant, but not at a prime steakhouse. Some of those servers are taking home more pay than you are. The hourly wage is irrelevant. All that matters is what the person actually makes per year, which for some servers, valets, and other tipped positions is quite high (and more than they're worth, given their skillset and difficulty of work).

    I actually have 3

    2002, 2008, 2018. I had a bad few years post housing crash.

Buy ‘em for business. Depreciate them to zero and reload.

They just don’t die. Can’t kill them. Worth more than resale I’d get so I keep them.

    They are all very different.
The 2002 is really a little Ford Ranger pick up.
The 2008 was an Eddie Bauer and rode pretty nice. V8 sucks gas - maybe 12 mpg
The new one is really nice.

My whole thing here is the price change. They knew in advance increasing the price from $15 to $17 would not result in any new revenue since everyone generally gives a $20 bill and walks out.

My point is, they had a conversation amongst themselves saying if they charge $20, we get a $5 rake to $25.

I get it, but it just seems unseemly a bunch of barbers sitting around for a beer one night figuring out how to squeeze another $5 out of the system. You'd think they would be talking about better haircuts, but whatever.

Any tipping thread will survive my attempts to derail it

I love cars. I can’t remember my kids names but I do shit like save the window stickers

    I had a 1997 Explorer too. RIP

It is amazing that the price for a loaded Explorer didn’t change from ‘97 to 2002. It’s shocking Ford got that much back then

My haircut costs $40 + tip. I go to a salon where all the employees are females, I refuse to let a man cut my hair.

Time to go check out SportClips if they are charging that much.. At least for a couple more bucks then the $20 you get a hella scalp massage and such from a decent looking chick.. Just saying.. Its why I quit going to Cost Cutters or any other "discount" place because theyre charging damn near the same rate as SportClips for a shitter service level..

Here there is a 50/50 shot at getting a good looking 25 year old or a 50 year old. Then there's the good old 0 and 00 which are just awful.

I dunno, I maxed out at around 90k "take home" as a waiter..

Even if the barber is the owner.. you still tip him For doing the service work and touching your filthy head. The profits of being an owner are different then also working a specific service job as well.

$25 ($20+5) is too much for a men's hair cut.. unfortunately it's time too find a new barber. For real..
