After about a year of the cards and hotel + campus routine, I ran into a problem. The lady I was seeing was graduating and I didn’t have a place of my own. Long story short, one of my Dads old buddies called me to his house in Ft Lauderdale and told me he had a job for me up North, not some gangster stuff wise guy, a job, like a 9-5 job. His brother was upper management at a company in Philadelphia and he could get me a starting level job, considering I had a degree, etc.
So, I just decided to do it. It’s my nature to be interested in new experiences and challenges, so I thought the idea of moving far away and having a stable job might be worth trying. I wasn’t too happy about location or weather but I also had no real other prospects other than hoping to grind poker. But I also didn’t really try, so looking back idk what opportunities I was expecting, as they don’t just fall into your lap in a Hialeah Poker Room.
I moved there and didn’t have any furniture so I just did the Craigslist roommate thing and found a room in a house already furnished with other guys, I just had to buy a bed.
The job was ok, corporate side of a bank, but I was doing boring first year stuff. Not really anything exciting, worked with guys my age who I liked and related to.
From the start though I just hated the fucking weather. Scraping ice off your window to drive to some boring job on a busy Philadelphia highway at 645 AM is not the Pipes Lifestyle at all, no way to live your life.
I also just immediately did not like working in a corporate atmosphere. I can blend in well but in no way was I like these people and they knew it, and I don’t mean being from a different state.
I did not excel at the job but was a solid employee, just did not put in any sort of extra work. Idk who cares that’s not the interesting part
Also from the start of the whole 9-5 thing, I was googling different options and paths to take. I was still under the illusion that I would just play cash games somewhere on the beach and get rich that way. Knew always was not going to get rich working middle management at some banks regional corporate office. I did make money the year I spent playing poker and bouncing around casinos and motels, but I also wasted most all of it on said accommodations and things that young guys spend their money foolishly on, but also did not properly understand this at that age. Do you know what I mean? I thought I was making a lot because I got paid in cash at casinos and had a lot of quick money but after paying all living expenses, albeit small at that age, etc you don’t wind up with me, now do you?
