In my experience, names and addresses and signatures are verified before the ballot is taken out of the envelope, then those envelopes are stored separately from the ballots that are removed from them. That's how secret ballot voting works. The ballot is SUPPOSED to be untraceable. Just like every other ballot cast. The envelopes are kept in the same batches as the ballots, they are not thrown out while any sort of counting is going on.

Also, the courts don't seem to agree that Republicans were stopped from viewing anything, anywhere.

re: complaints in observing the count: i was at my county's ballot count room on election night--i went there with the local republican club president and a few others...while the public and local parties were allowed to observe, observers were kept at a distance 20+ feet from the count tables..as a result observers unfamiliar with count procedures would be mystified by the worker's activity. I can understand the thinking of the county clerk and the count employees--they want to get the count done without needless interruptions.

My state publishes a manual of operations for election supervisors and workers. I wish I had known of the manual before that night, i would have read up and watched to make sure the procedures were followed. (I don't know if the republican club president knew of the manual).

re: the count room, the manual calls for 2 counters are each counting table, with no more that one counter per political party at the table. Each counter is to wear identification plainly visible, and count supervisors are to circulate the room where all the counting tables are located.

One problem is recruiting election workers--the county clerk tries to hire from each political party to fulfill the staffing requirements laid out in the manual. However, there are never enough...the job is only for 2 days, pays about $15 per hour, requires 20 hours of work but one of the work days goes for 14 hours. Also, this year with the Covid, many of the elderly/retired did not sign up because of health concerns.

Those simple measures i mentioned above imho do a lot to ensure a fair count (i say that having had years of experience as a CPA doing audits and observing dozens of inventories--the count of votes is quite similar to a business taking inventory).

I believe the states need to do a better job of informing the public of how the votes are tabulated...publishing the manual and having count rooms open for observation are good steps, far better is some public service commercials or providing online videos would remove the mystery and promote belief in the system.
