At the end of the day, you need votes and try to craft arguments for why ignorant assholes aren’t just ignorant assholes when they’re on your side.
Like I watch him try to defend Trump and I think of myself trying to craft sociological arguments around a BLM type movement and as soon as you think you have a good argument, some large segment of the movement go do something so stupid that you’re like fuck these assholes, they’re dead to me now. He just isn’t at that they’re dead to me part because he knows he needs their votes. You go from seeing things you agreed with when they were organic to hating what they morph into.
I don’t believe for a second he reads a split post or any other nutjob here and doesn’t cringe. He’s too smart not to. He’s simply more sympathetic to their views and when a thousand insane tweets come rolling in from conspiracy theorists, he doesn’t agree with it here, but he doesn’t make a post about it either.
But a few nurses who are no doubt attention seeking, but also is indicative of a mindset that exists and that paints his side in a bad light, he’s never missing that.
I’d love to think what emerges after all this bullshit is more sentiment like sloppy joe or gut saying these crazy motherfuckers here in Portland have made me less sympathetic to the fringe, or any of the republicans here who finally had enough of Trump would be the norm.
Where calling people who might vote your way assholes if they’re indeed assholes became the norm. Unfortunately that won’t happen. The genie is out of the bottle. We are on a downward spiral from all appearances and everyone appears entrenched despite being repulsed by a large faction of the people who happen to vote their way. They’re like bad relations you end up defending because they’re family.
