Many Canadians to this day hate his guts

Oct. 19 marks the 30th anniversary of Blue Monday, a day that will live in infamy with Expos fans.

That was the day Rick Monday hit a two-out, ninth-inning home run as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Expos in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, denying Nos Amours a trip to the World Series.

    Blue Monday.

“Everybody who followed the Expos will remember the National League Championship Series of 1981 when they lost out on Blue Monday to the Los Angeles Dodgers,” Van Horne said. “That was a low point for all of us because the team had reached an elevated stature within the National League and we were within one game of going to the World Series. But over the 32 years there would be more high points than low points. Most of the low points came in the last eight to 10 years when we just watched the downward spiral of the franchise and the loss of interest among fans and the loss of interest in baseball from the business community, not only of Montreal but across Canada.

“The fact that they didn’t get a great deal of support for their advertising on both radio and television, and the attendance numbers went down year after year after the mid-’80s. There was a little bit of a bounce back and a spike in attendance in the early ’90s, certainly in 1994 when the team had arguably one of the best teams in baseball and was headed for the World Series. But the baseball players’ strike ended all that and I think that was the last chance for the Expos to survive.”

    Opening day at Dodger Stadium.

They're off to a pretty good 3-1 start to the season already, but it was against the shitty Padres.

They're introducing members of the 1962 Dodgers team right now in the pre-game ceremony.

Obviously they're all over 70, some over 80.

I have Kershaw and Dee Gordon on my fantasy team. Kershaw is the best pitcher in the NL right now and possibly the majors although Verlander is GOD

Gordon will swipe 60+ bags if he can hit a bit

I have Kershaw on my fantasy team also. In addition, I got Matt Kemp and Juan Uribe. Fortunately I was smart enough to bench Uribe. I even have middle reliever Josh Lindblom.

Kershaw looking great so far in the first inning. Looks like he's probably over that bad flu from last week.

Also I hope you're enjoying Gordon's stolen bases -- he just got his 4th.

lol @ Pirates getting a leadoff triple and not scoring.

That's pretty much proof positive that you're overmatched by the pitcher.

Agree. The guy sucks, and it's especially brutal to have him at first base, where you're supposed to have a good hitter.

Too bad they can't go get Steve Garvey back from the '70s. I'll even take the '90s Eric Karros.

1B has been a disaster for the Dodgers since Karros left.

Think of how much the Dodgers would own heads if they could just get decent players at first and third base, and sign another good starting pitcher.

The might have the league's best leadoff hitter in Gordon, the best hitter in Kemp, and the best starting pitcher in Kershaw. How the fuck do you not at least turn that into a division title?

That division is tough, I wouldn't be surprised to see both Wild cards from the west.

I agree w/the Kemp part, and arguably you are right on the other 2, but they will need more than that to win this division.
Arizona is 7 deep in starters, Cahill is 4? Enright is in Reno, and Miley (who owned the G's this weekend) is in long relief.
    And Arizona can fucking hit.

Of course it is my team, but I'd be shocked if the LA can beat SF in the standings.
Don't worry about SF starters and the 0-3 start, SF was 55-9 last year in games w/4 runs scored.
And Zito, got his 1st shut out since 03, 1st as a Giant, and the first one ever recorded @ Coors Field.

I was wondering why they were celebrating the 1962 Dodgers,
Giants made the WS that year, as they will be celebrating the SF 62 team this year.

Game 7 vs the Yankees in SF
    NYY 1-0
    Bottom 9
    2 outs man on 1st Mays up, Willie Mac on deck and Cepeda after that;
Mays hits a 2B, Alou only gets to 3B.
McCovey lines out to 2B to end it.

Kershaw is definitely 1 or 1A when it comes to best SP in the NL. Kemp had a monster year last year, and should have some regression (he also had a horrible 2010, hitting .249 i think). I'd still take Braun over Kemp. Gordon is nowhere close to being the best leadoff hitter in the NL, he's barely a replacement level player. He has raw speed and can hit singles at a .280-.300 BA clip. He also has no power and doesn't draw walks. His OBP in the half season with the big club last year was .22 pts below James Loney's career OBP.

Of course, Gordon is young and could get better, but his offensive skill projects to a career like a Juan Pierre or Scott Podsednik. I'll take Jose Reyes, Rickie Weeks, or brandon phillips hitting leadoff for me any day.

Okay, I was too enthusiastic about Gordon. He still has some maturing to do, and yes, we need to wait some time to see if he becomes a great leadoff man or a Juan Pierre type who can just run fast.

Kemp might not hit like he did in 2011, but I don't think he'll be anywhere near what he was in 2010. He's at the typical point in his career when good players hit their prime. Some of his problems in 2010 occurred because he was fighting with Dodger upper management. Obviously this is all forgiven after they kissed his ass last year and then awarded him a giant contract.

I do have to admit Kemp didn't look good today, but after the week he had to open 2012, it's forgivable if he sucks for one game.

Dodgers win and go to 4-1 on the season.

Sorry, Jimmy, but the Giants are terrible. I mean, Aubrey Huff hitting cleanup? looooooooooooooooool

Dodgers looking better than expected so far, but I'd like to see how they do against good teams.

I expect that the Dodgers will probably finish ahead of the Giants, Rockies, and Padres, but I admit that the D-backs have the edge at the moment.

The Giants, Rockies, and Dodgers all have the most bizarre overall rosters in baseball, and being in the same division. You could make an all-star team out of their best players (Kershaw, Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner as starters, Kemp, Posey, Sandoval, Tulowitski, CarGo hitting), yet the remaining pieces are laughable. The Dodgers collected as many guys named Juan who are horrible players, the rockies have a 49-year old starting pitcher who somehow is one of their top 5, and the Giants cant score runs.
