First Class Flights are NOT worth it

So a couple weeks ago I took a trip to California, it was a little R & R. So I decided on my free flight to use points to upgrade to first class. I burned up a lot of points for basically nothing. A couple free drinks and a larger seat simply is not worth it. The exclusive bathroom was a bonus, who knew I would have to take a horrendous dump hour #3 but I could enjoy it since there was no line.

    Thank you for your time.

Or you can fuck a flight attendant and get a free trip.

In before Druff's 8 paragraph response.

upgrading to premium econ using my chase sapphire points was like, the whole point of getting a chase sapphire card, and now they have quietly eliminated premium econ for any painless flights so im just saving my points for my next asia trip or my perm exfiltration to new zealand, whichever comes first.

Flew last week, and wondered why first class passengers board first, only to have to sit through the line of cattle making their way back to the seats, getting bumped with luggage etc.

Ideally you spend as few minutes on a plane as possible. I would rather board dead last, get off and be done with it.

What more were you expecting? All of the reasons you listed are why first class is worth it to me.

hard to say how much this factors into it, but people are aggressively abusing the carry-on rules, perhaps because airlines are now gouging on checked bags, so the first to board will usually use all the fucking overhead storage at the front of the plane. if youre in the final boarding group and have something needing overhead storage, 50/50 they essentially wrench it out of your hands and stow it in the hold, where it may or may not be taken off the plane after you land and before it takes off on its next flight.

Which is why Phil Hellmuth Jr and Daniel Negreanu only fly by private plane charter.

1st class and business class are for poor motherfuckers.

isnt there some website that does nothing but get people seats on charter jets that otherwise would fly empty?

Yes. The name escapes me at the moment. But you can tell them the route you would like to know about and they will email you if and when it becomes available.

Flying private is very overrated. Done it and it was meh. At the end of the day you're still trapped in a room smaller than tgull's master bathroom

Just booked First Class seats for me and wifey to fly from MIA to SJD with miles. The flight has 2 legs each of more than 2.5 hours with a layover in Dallas. I always have to pay for a seat with extra leg room anyway (on American because their regular seats have no fucking legroom), so I figured it would be more comfortable. I accumulate a shit ton of miles each year by charging everything my business uses on my AA Credit card. So, it seemed like the thing to do. I would never pay $$$ for First Class seats, though. Just not worth it.

Depends on the plane. Essentially worthless to upgrade on small commuter planes and 737's unless you are an alcoholic. Worth it on the big planes for long trips. The real value is Amex Plat or airline specific credit cards that give you lounge access.

I totally agree with the Amex lounge access. Have used it in several countries. Yes the free food and drink is good. They have comfortable chairs or couches to sit on, and outlets to charge your devices. But the main benefit is clean restrooms. It's hard to take a proper dump in a regular airport bathroom dirty stall.

Agree that the Amex Centurion Lounge is top-top.

Regarding first class, it's more necessary for me than others because:

    1) I'm taller than 97.5% of the US population.
    2) My anxiety problems of last year still remain in low-grade (and probably won't ever completely vanish), and now make flying harder. So whereas before I used to do a mixture of economy plus and first class, now I pretty much need first class.

I don't drink, so I don't derive the benefit from the alcohol. Food is better, but is overrated. Often it kinda sucks anyway, and isn't that much better than the food-for-purchase in coach.

Regarding boarding early, I used to hate it for the reasons already stated by others, but it's necessary because of the carryon idioticry where people quickly take up the overhead bin space, even in first class. I used to wait til close to the last minute to board because I prefer to be on the plane for as little time as possible, but I can't do that now.

Regarding the overall quality of first class, there is huge variance from plane to plane. Domestic US first class isn't very good, but it's still big step up from coach if you need the room (and/or it's a long flight).

International first class is WAY better. Some planes -- especially ones used for international routes -- now have the sleeper seats, which is a step above regular domestic first class. Look for "Delta One" or "United Polaris". I think American also has a similar product, but I'm not sure what it's called. If you can get it for the same price as regular first class, definitely grab it.

True. More importantly, people need to figure out the typical near-optimal value of their miles (there are websites which list this), and not use the miles unless they get such value, or unless the flight is super-overpriced and you can't take something else cheaper.

Some people just shoot off their miles as if they are worthless. Reminds me of how people waste their RCs or other casino points, thinking they are "comps", which they aren't.

Normally if there is a medical emergency they ask if there is a doctor on board, has there ever been a clogged shitter emergency they've needed you for?
