I tried to help him, and also failed.
The built-in stereo mix function on his computer simply does not work, and the Indians at Dell have no fucking clue what they're doing. Now they're demanding they send out a tech to his house and replace his motherboard with a refurbished motherboard.
L O fucking L.
Just about zero point zero chance it's the motherboard. Almost surely looks like a driver or registry setting issue. Sadly, this fix will need to come from the sound card manufacturer, and it's nothing I can figure out on my own (most likely).
Still working on it.
FYI, the issue is that his microphone is not heard in stereo mix mode. He can put it on microphone mode and it works fine, but then you can't hear any sounds through his computer (meaning the listener won't be able to hear phone calls). He can put it on stereo mix and people can hear his computer sounds, but won't be able to hear him.
The "Microphone level" slider does NOT appear on the Windows "Speaker Levels" settings box, which I believe is the issue (or at least the main symptom of the issue).
There's probably an obscure registry key somewhere which will fix this, but I have no idea what it would be.
