Reminds me of private tours on Caribbean islands. Even though they are owner-operated, the tour guide gets irritated if you don't tip him at the end, even though you originally negotiated a price to begin with!

The whole tipping culture basically sucks. Europe has that part right. Employees should just be paid what they're worth to the business, and tipping should cease entirely.

Tipping culture in the US has gotten out of hand to where you're expected to tip nearly everyone for everything, and there are constant new angles for tips (even the cashier at counters of takeout places).

It's also very inequitable. There are people who will judge you if you only tip the valet $1 or your server 18%, yet those same people will walk by janitors mopping the floor for minimum wage and never hand them a penny.

I also love the excuse of, "Well, servers work for less than minimum wage, so you have to tip them well so they can make a living."

That's true if they are working at a cheapo low-end restaurant, but not at a prime steakhouse. Some of those servers are taking home more pay than you are. The hourly wage is irrelevant. All that matters is what the person actually makes per year, which for some servers, valets, and other tipped positions is quite high (and more than they're worth, given their skillset and difficulty of work).
I dunno, I maxed out at around 90k "take home" as a waiter..

Even if the barber is the owner.. you still tip him For doing the service work and touching your filthy head. The profits of being an owner are different then also working a specific service job as well.

$25 ($20+5) is too much for a men's hair cut.. unfortunately it's time too find a new barber. For real..
How much do you tip your crack dealer?

I put Owner in " " because the other barbers pay a seat charge so without the seat charges the "Owner" cannot pay rent. I guess he gets the final decisions on things but it's not like he is some CEO. It's a collective effort.

So like 7 years ago the haircut cost was $12, and everyone always gave $15 with tip. Then all of a sudden the price jumped to $15, which was ok since you just gave the guy a $20. I always felt $12 was too low, so giving a solid $20 was ok in my book.

Now, they just raised priced again which is fine as that is part of life. But instead of raising it to $17 it was raised to $20. They did this for a reason. If they raised it to $17 everyone would still give a $20 bill. But by raising it to $20 you have to go over with the tip.

So I gave my barber $22 under protest, not $25. I asked him why they raised it 1/3rd and he took the easy way out saying it was the "Owner" decision of course he was not there.

$25 is too much for a men's haircut, since they take like 10 minutes. This is not a salon where you get a wash and a blow dry.

    Great thread.
If you are that cheap get a braun trimmer and buzz your head. When I pulverized my ankle I couldnt get in the shower for weeks. Cant go that long without washing my hair and it was mid back length. Wasnt going to fuck with the knots washing it in the kitchen sink so I grabbed a pair of shears and lopped that shit off to chin length. Just below shoulders now. Hate short hair.

Now it is as dry as straw because of all the swimming I do. But holla at a made nigga, my retro swim cap just arrived today, its the old style with the attached flowers. I remember being a kid and picking the flowers off those caps. What is old is new. What is new is old.

Is $25 tip included too much for a haircut and beard trim/lineup. Shit takes like 45 mins (longer if you include wait time) but always fresh as fuck.

Just a haircut, and a neck shave. Still, it takes like 10 minutes. There were like 5 guys behind me so nobody is complaining. I just was a little pissed he off'd me to the fake owner when in reality he not only approved the price change but likely encouraged it.

I have a hard time getting a haircut usually so this is a great thread.

Ive come to the conclusion if your a man and go to a salon for a haircut your doing it all wrong. Barber Shops are so much better for mens haircuts and its usually not a woman doing the cuttting. I get some of the worst haircuts from women.. niw give me a Rican who can cut somenhair and you cant go wrong imo

$20 is a fair number for a haircut imo, a good one.

The issue with women giving a haircut is they are terrified in cutting too much off. The last haircut I got from a woman was like 15 years ago. It was a salon, I got a shampoo and then she proceeded to cut like 5 strands of hair off. Then she whipped out the blow dryer, I looked ridiculous when I left, my hair was huge. Next day I went to a barber and never looked back, I maybe have a half inch hair now.

I think we are getting to the root of Druff’s lifelong experience with bad service. He operates from the perception that his tip is an act of generosity toward the worker (who he feels often doesn’t need it).

Tipping is done to reward and encourage good service as well as develop relationships. You do it for you, not them. This is independent of how much that guy earns. $100k for instance.

But tipping the barber who owns the place is stupid, for obvious reasons. Unfortunately, it's now expected, so you're looked at like an asshole if you don't.
I offered my small example of giving my mechanic a gift card on the console when I left the car.

Maybe mechanics make $70-80k a year. I haven’t thought about it. The reality is that like almost everyone else his day is probably a grind. Car after car. His interest in doing his best and maybe a little extra is gonna wax and wane.

But it’s MY car. I want a relationship between him and me. I want him to give a particular fuck about my car and me. I will reward you if you look out for me. That has value to me and I will pay for it. I tip for selfish reasons. I don’t give a fuck how much he earns.

People do not think about their hourly wage. Ahh, it’s 11am I just made another $35. People perform in a motivated way for reasons behind wage. The barber sees endless heads. Feet get tired and I imagine it’s no thrill. How inspired will he be when you show up? Does he expect you are a special customer based on previous experience?

If the barber treats you special that day.. is particularly cheerful and suggests something different to improve your appearance is that not worth extra? You walk out feeling and looking great. Maybe you even had a good time.

A well paid mechanic, barber or a shop owner are people too. They have human frailties.

Tipping is for my benefit not his. It’s a fucking bribe. Pretend to give a particular shit about me.

Perhaps you can’t afford to tip. It’s a burden and stressful to your pocket. You resent it. I get it. Not everyone gets the same level of service. Too bad for you.

Maybe a tip is a bribe.

Sparten, check this out. We hold corporate outings. We had some land and facilities that sat idle sometimes during the summer. The outings bring in nice added revenue. So the weather the other day is humid and hot as hell. The experience for the customer would have been better on a cooler day.

The event manager picks up the his cell phone and calls an ice cream truck. “How fast can you get down here? I have a lot of potential customers for you.” I am watching him while he makes this spontaneous call.

So the ice cream truck arrives lickety -split (lol) and the guy is killing it and has a long line. At the end the ice cream guy walks over to the event manager and stuffs some money in my event manager’s pocket. I ask, “what was that about?”

My event manager says, “those guys are Greek”. Now I’m completely lost. Event mgr says, “that’s the Greek culture.” Little bit of a kickback or a “tip”. You and those ice cream guy’s KNOW he’s gonna get another call.

    Everybody wins in that transaction.

I never thought about it but my guy’s last name ends in “itzs”. He has to tell me, “sanlmar, I’m Greek”. Palm to forehead.

My boy fucking kills corporate outings. If we didn’t have 300 days of winter we’d all be rich. Wheeler dealer of the first order.

Druff (10am appointment) and Sanlmar (10:15am) go for an oil change in September 2018.

Druff comes in at 9:45am, mentions he is in a hurry today but still wants the free car wash. Heads to the waiting room where he buys a bottle of pepsi and grabs a couple of the free cookies.

Sanlmar comes in at 10:30 and apologies for being late (was too busy trading stocks) but asks for his regular mechanic. Mechanic even comes out to say a quick hi and grabs his keys right away.

At 11am, Druff is pissed his car isn't done and is enquiring where his car is.

At 11:15am, Sanlmar's mechanic walks by Druff (now talking to a service manager asking about a $5 discount or free air freshener) and is pleased to tell Sanlmar his car is done early.

This might give Druff a heart attack but my policy for tipping someone cutting my hair is a 100% tip policy. So my haircut costs $40 + $40 tip. Doesn't hurt that the lady cutting my hair has the most perfect breasts and a juicy ass.

    there are two types of mens haircuts;

    - salon cuts where youre actually getting shampood and styled, and the stylist, whom is gay, does so using a pair of proper shears. these are in the $35-$55 range, pre-tip.

    - maintenance cuts where some fat slob with a pair of clippers who is not gay asks what you want then does the closest he can get to it without requiring real effort or talent or experience. these cost $15'ish. pre-tip.

$20 for a maintenance cut is genuinely absurd and id sooner find a new barber than pay $20, outright.

the one reason to show flex here is if they do hot towel shaves as well and they are reasonably priced to a point where it offsets the cost of the cut itself somehow.

and even this has become problematic because if your barber isnt aging and swarthy, they probably havent the faintest idea how to properly use a straight razor and youll just end up 'fixing' what they miss in the shower later that night and pretending youre not infuriated.

so yes its a very complicated issue and there are no easy answers, op.
