Putin and the Russian oligarchs have long viewed the European democracies as economic and political enemies, firstly because the leading Western European nations pushed for and welcomed the former Soviet Bloc nations into NATO and the European Union, but also because the majority ethnic Ukrainians wanted to Ukraine wanted to also join. The overthrow of Russia’s puppet in the Ukraine (Yanukovych) with the 2104 revolution kicked that animosity into high gear, and spurred Team Putin to start a quasi-war for control of ethnic-Russian heavy eastern Ukraine and strategically important Crimea. That military agression spurred the western democracies, including the US, to enact sanctions against Russia. In response, Putin ramped up his covert campaign to destabilize the policy unity between the US and its democratic Western allies. And that campaign is progressing quite nicely with Trump’s help.

No idea how much of the credit goes to Trump's administration, but the world is much, much safer than it was 48 hours ago.

My big concern tbh is that, lets be honest, Trump is so unstable that if he doesnt get _exactly_ what he think he got from Kim, he's literally going to B-2 airstrike Pyongyang before anyone can stop him.

This type of thing must be true because, you know, people keep saying it.

So, what does that have to do with the US’ trade relations with the western democracies?

    This is a good post.

BUT there's nothing quasi about the war in Donbass. Boys are coming home in coffins on a regular basis. It's dreadfully sad and most of it is being done by funding rebels (DPR/LPR) and Wagner group.

Btw, Crimea is super peaceful now. It's been well integrated into the Russian Federation. I'm actually going on a holiday there in September (when it starts to get cold in Moscow, but will still be hot there).

we’ll have to see what comes out of this, but i give trump huge credit for his effort so far with north korea. i don’t see how this can be viewed as anything other than positive so far.

and schumer and pelosi are just loathsome political hacks for attacking trump as “legitimizing a dictator.” they obv don’t want north korea to denuclearize during trump’s presidency.

i’m disappointed that biden had a negative statement too, but i guess he plans on running in 2020 so he figures he needs to downplay any positive trump press.

at least bernie sanders was honest and called the summit a positive step

Other than being the one in office at the time what exactly did Trump do?

    and rhetoric don't count.

He luck boxed into something but has a trail of fail behind him.

You should check out CNN. They are completely devoted to spinning this as negatively as possible from angles you probably can't even imagine.

i think the exact opposite of this. it was most likely trump himself that wanted to sit down and work out a deal with kim jong un. remember that trump is a huge narcissist that probably doesn’t care what his foreign policy advisers are telling him, much less listen to them. he probably legit believes that through his amazing personality alone, he would get a deal done, and that he’ll be praised for it. bolton is a huge war hawk that was probably against this meeting from the outset but trump ignored him.

you say that he was just the one that was in the office and that he luckboxed into this, but no other president has ever tried this (and they’ve all failed). there would have been a 0.0% chance that hillary would have met with kim.

Maybe I'm wrong but was Trump not notified of a possible meeting from some diplomat visiting Washington? Trump has no clue about anything diplomatic. N. Korea is in desperate times and had to do something.
Is America, the greatest military might ever, worried about half a peninsula, half a world away who say they have this or that?

I heard a recent opinion stating that South Korea would clean up on North Korea if push came to shove. Say nothing about China/Japan
America is afraid or at least they want their populace to be so, ad infinitum
