People really love to complain about everything here.
This thread became several off-topic discussions, some of which were interesting and worthy of their own threads.
Rather than having the confusion of various conversations going on at once, I split them up so they could all take place separately, and therefore became more readable.
As Willie pointed out, one side effect of this was that the trolling of me in this thread actually became more prominent, as the off-topic stuff was no longer distracting people from it. So clearly I didn't do this for selfish reasons.
I did not delete a single message from the thread. All were either preserved or moved.
It was discovered today that the bug spray I used was a fail version with 7% DEET.
I won't be making that mistake again, either.
Next time:

Druff, I'm quite surprised by your failure to vet the bug repellant you used. Perhaps because you hadn't yet hiked where the biting insects have the capacity to drain all of the blood from a fully grown unprotected human in less than a few hours.
But at least you weren't in Alaska during the brief 2-week long summer, where, apparently, the mosquitos are large enough to carry off small children.
You'd probably be super bummed right now about losing young Benjamin to them.
In one thread you had mosquito bites, the merits of camping, the importance of tire rotation, Thor Heyerdahl & Kon Tiki, Dr Peters stroked out, Kurt Vonnegut, Jeep death rattle, the average height of teenagers, high protein diets and of course drinking.
You achieved 10,000 views. You don't achieve that on OP merit unless you contract Syphilis.
This is how people converse over a couple of beers. Never knowing where you'll end up is what makes those nights fun.
I get the basic premise of thread topics but there was chemistry & a little magic.
Thread snuffin' Druffin
Forgot about this thread until now.
Not a huge fan of magic recently. Blaine and his over the top ilk spoiled it for me.
This kid has me wanting to poke around and see what’s new. He’s a credit to the craft.
Never saw Penn & Teller Fool Us. May give it a cautious try too
Drop some magic you like here. Automotive thoughts are welcome too.
Might be Ebola. Hope not.
I'll give credit to the Canuck doctor in Canmore, Alberta. She got it right. It was of no concern, and simply waiting it out was the solution.
I did think of this thread last night when I watched a recent Steven Crowder video. At the end, he had on a nice girl who looked 25-30, and she didn't appear very healthy. Turned out she was a clickbait author for his website, but was resigning due to health reasons.
The health issue was due to late stage Lyme disease. It had all kinds of neurological effects on her, and basically there seemed to be no prognosis for improvement anytime soon.
This all happened because she got a tick bite and didn't act on it fast enough.
Made me happy that I made the effort to get to a doctor within 48 hours of noticing this, even though it was a pain in the ass given where I was traveling. Turned out it wouldn't have mattered in this particular case, but this girl's story was a reminder how something seemingly small can become very big if you ignore it.
On a side note, I still haven't decided where to take a summer trip this year.
Open to suggestions. Gonna have to bring the Deet I bought this time (unless there's no mosquitoes where I go), because I do seem to have a legit allergy to them now.
Preferably looking for a place not too hot/humid, and with a lot of interesting nature sights. The problem is that I've pretty much covered most interesting parts of the US and Canada over the past 6 years or so.
Cayman islands is cool, aruba would be the poor mans version..
Been to both and both are cool..
Something more exotic would be the island of santorini for a couple of weeks..even though its greece im still being objective..
Great accessible antiquities and a laid back atmosphere. The air and energy and fresh Mediterranean food will make you anew and in retrospect really is affordable for a couple of weeks..
If i ever bink an mtt of note, im thinking some swiming hole at the bottom of a waterfall in new Zealand.
I would probably live as an illigal over there if they werent so strict over there. I guess thats why the standerd of living and environment is so pristine and why the obamas, clintons, soros, zuccerberg have houses there...#elitestglobalisthipocrites.
Personally im thinking vegas for a week come the fall..
Probably sounds lame for you guys but hey its all perspective and will probably cost me a preety penny regardless..
When i vacation, i preety much do as i please regardless of cost but the trade of is fewer vacations for shorter periods..
If Ben is old enough for a four hour backpack hike, consider doing Havasu Falls. But don’t be a pussy and use *two* hiking poles like one of the douches in this video.
P.S. The falls are called “Havasu Falls”, not “Havasupai...”. The latter name refers to people whose reservation the falls are located on.
Since it's getting a little late to do a lot of the traditional park stuff what about South Dakota?
If you haven't taken Ben yet, you could do the following:
Fly to Rapid City
Visit Custer State Park
Black Hills
Mt Rushmore
Deadwood
Then you could extend the trip if you so desire by doing the following:
Drive over to the Badlands
Visit Wall Drug
Visit the Corn Palace
(Could fly home from Sioux Falls)
You could extend your trip even further by:
Going to Fargo
Driving to Itasca State Park and seeing the headwaters of the Mississippi River
Fly home from Fargo
