One of my companies works out of a tech incubator in Chicago. There are more female coders than male coders. It’s refreshing to see. Promoting science to women early on in life is going to help us a lot in the future.
We pray for understanding as we all occasionally request back door action by accident, when we tried to call an electrician. It happens, it simply happens.
If I were an investor and found this out I would bail. I have worked with decent women coders but the real geniuses that drive the projects are always men. On a team of 9 coders there are 3 that do over 50% of the work and of those 3 people 2.9 of them are men. Why would you create a team that is doomed to be mediocre at best?
Because young women/girl's have until recently been discouraged from getting into coding, Deal's extant experience is undoubtedly biased at least in part because the male coder talent pool was traditionally much larger than the female one, resulting in a much higher likelihood that the super-coders would be males.
But that doesn't exclude the possibility that there is something biologically inherent among males that *on average* makes *more of them* better at coding than females and/or *some of them* much better than even the best female coders. We just don't know enough about potential differences in male and female physiology to definitively rule out an inherent sexual dimophic factor.
I have a friend who works in medical device sales. Does really well. He knows he can’t talk politics as everyone in management are right-wing zealots. He just goes to work and avoids the subject like a grownup. Doesn’t whine and cry.
I have noticed that these boot camps I have quite a few females. No idea of the exact breakdown but of the only people I know who graduated from them and have been successful they are all women. But development comes in many many different flavors these days.
I agree that if you are trying to develop some very complicated software you do not want a team of women. However having women run a company and run it in a specific way geared towards women could be golden. If your product is something like Etsy or something like that
I have owned and run software businesses for the last 12 years and worked in software for another 10 years.
50% of my staff have been female, so I'm not looking at this from a misogynistic viewpoint. Women are just better at (and therefore more attracted to) certain roles. These are analysis, testing, implementation, project management, general management, admin, finance, marketing and sales. For god sake have women in sales.
But the blokes are just better at (and therefore more attracted to) software dev and to some degree ops and support. This is shown through by the number of applicants and the quality of applicants - measured by in-tray exercises.
