To be fair to Larry, there were millions of people in 2003 dreaming of being the next Chris Moneymaker, myself included. It's intoxicating to believe of life in Las Vegas, being on TV, having hot babes draped all over you paid or otherwise. I am quite sure Larry somewhere along the way hit the brick wall of poker reality, in that professional poker is a seedy, mind numbing game, with a crippling lifestyle. I mean would anyone on this forum trade places with Barry Greenstein or Dutch Boyd? Probably not.

Very odd Saturday for me so far all the way around.

It started off by me receiving a call from Garett (seriously) at around 8am my time. More on that later.

I didn't want to create more drama on here regarding Larry, so I kept quiet. I was hoping not to have to call him out publicly but my good pal over in Oslo would have none of that.

Larry hit me up on my radio number pretty shortly after he joined pfa. Mostly small talk. He billed himself as being a pfa historian. Knew all the stories of this community dating back to the NWP days.

He was friendly in our correspondences and to be honest I kind of developed a soft spot for the kid. Thought he was a good decent person albeit naive.

During the summer I met him at the Rio to give him $1500 from Cmoney. Introduced him to some real life friends of mine. Had some meals. No issues.

I would say I eventually became some what of a mentor for the kid. Or at least tried to be.

I really didn't want to call him out. Or embarrass him. But he's kind of left me no choice at this point.

Larry is a losing poker player. He called/texted me constantly about his frustration at the poker table. Whether it was limit (mainly 10-20) or NL (1-2,1-3), he just would never win.

I suggested books, playing shorter sessions, playing tighter, booking small wins to get his confidence up but nothing seemed to work.

I literally spent tens of hours on the phone with him giving encouragement and advice.

He told me a story of a specific hand. 10-20 limit. He raised in EP with the AcQc and got 3b by the button. By the river, there were 3 clubs on the unpaired board.

Larry got into a raising battle heads up.

He couldn't wait to scoop what had become a massive pot.

After 8 or 9 raises, Larry was heads up only to see the bad news. His hand was actually the AhQc!!!!!

As his opponent showed his ATc to scoop the massive pot, Larry's heart sunk.

The above hand actually happened. He called me literally in tears recounting it to me.

Anyhow the below is all true. It's not interesting or even funny. But it's truthful and what led to our falling out.



Larry called me one day and said he wanted to come to Vegas and play in The Real Grinders series at the Venetian.

He said (I swear) his mom told him he couldn't use his credit card anymore. He asked me to put the plane ticket on mine and that he would pay me back when he arrived.

I agreed.

A day or two later, he called me and wanted to abort the Real Grinders poker series.

He had seen a post on pfa about members playing at live at the bike and wanted to do that instead.

He asked if I would go with him. Split hotel costs.

I told him in no uncertain terms that maybe I could go but I couldn't commit but he was a big boy and could go on his own/with out me etc.

When he found out that Ryland had reserved a seat for me and not him, Larry was livid.

He thought that I had purposely sabotaged him from getting a seat on live at the bike. I tried to reason and explain Ryland did that without my knowledge. That I most likely wasn't even going. That he could have my seat etc but Larry was having none of that. He really thought I maliciously screwed him out of a seat.

Larry thought that live at the bike was his big break. That people would see him play and it would open doors for him, would present opportunities, staking, sponsorship, etc.

I know. I know. I'm just telling you what happened.

After larry told me to fuck off, I said fine. I asked him to repay me a small amount of money he owed me.

He told me to go fuck myself.

As druff mentioned, he then brought this up to Larry. Larry then told druff to go fuck himself too and that he was never talking to either of us again and he was leaving pfa forever.

All very odd but true.

We may never hear from Larry again, but I'm sure he's out there somewhere, raising and re-raising with 4 to the flush.

When I tried reasoning with him, there were 3 things that he attempted to misdirect my way alluding I had done him wrong.

1) I made a joke on radio saying that he told a black stripper at play it again sams on a Wednesday morning that he loved her (he didn't say he loved her. But he did ask if he could see her again)

2) he was mad at me that when he came to Vegas the second time that I didn't get to hang out with him. I unfortunately for the last two years have gotten some relapsing insanely debilitating migraines. I wouldn't wish these things on my worst enemy. BUT although I couldn't hang out with him, I arranged for him to stay in MY friends two story villa at the hard rock with a 24-7 butler in the room.

3) he felt I didn't "defend him" in his ongoing stalking situation of Kilgore.

Other than that, he honestly truly felt that I sabotaged him being on live at the bike. That (honest to god quote) "this is my big break and you screwed me".

Again, I told him to take my seat. To go ahead and play.

At this point the melt down was complete. He would not listen to logic. He really felt as if I maliciously hurt him (which I didn't)

Garrett has been trying to get a hold of me via twitter for a number of years.

We finally touched base this morning.

I hadnt spoken with him since handing him $1500 in the bellagio parking garage over 3 years ago.

He apologized for threatening to kill me and my family, for attempting to negatively SEO my name in a fantasy sports thread 3 years ago.

I forgave him.

He went on to tell me about his new girlfriend. He briefly put her on the phone to talk to me as she came running outside to where he was thinking he was talking to another girl and cheating on her (I swear.)

I told her I was Drexel from the internet/bellagio parking garage. She then said to Garett, "oh I guess you were telling the truth"

He told me he sent a public tweet to Todd (someone pull it up) asking to come back to pfa.

He seemed in good spirits.

We left it agreeing to potentially have more dialogue in the future.

I want to add something to this - and all recent joking and sarcasm aside, I unequivocally mean what I am about to say.

My exchanges with Larry were very similar to what Drexel describes in the two previous posts. Larry wanted desperately to be a part whatever everyone else was a part of. When I started actively posting, Larry noticed I was receiving a lot of attention. He thought by befriending me - he would earn some sort of de facto popularity and acceptance from the group. He began PM’ing me. And I did reply, in a friendly manner, at the beginning. Like Drexel, I offered him poker advice and other general life advice. I complimented him - by telling him I felt he was intelligent and articulate. I still believe those things about him.

This went on for about 2-3 days - before he went off the rails. It was the middle of summer. I was traveling while this was going on and was otherwise busy. I’m not overly chatty on social media as it is and when he started flooding my inbox with messages and making demands of my time - I stopped replying to his messages. He took my friendliness and kindness to be more than it was.

In all reality - I don’t think Larry had romantic feelings for me. I think he was lonely and felt he had won my approval. He felt rejected and and angry when I made the decision to not engage him any further. At that point, he decided to look for me on Instagram and Facebook. That was crossed a line which I was not comfortable with. I made the choice then and there to shut him down and block him. I also took a hiatus from PFA.

It seems to me that Larry suffers from some sort of arrested development or immaturity issues. As intelligent as he is - he lacks social skills and street smarts. I hope he can look critically at this entire experience and grow from it (pun intended) into a man, because this spoiled little boy act won’t get him too far in life.
