It was a racket... my folks took me to a psychologist. They did an IQ test (128, wow, your son is smart! he should be getting GOOD grades!) then he put me in front of a computer with a clicky test. i had a clicker in my hand, and it would show a flashing square. you had to click it when it was a certain color. I passed it perfectly (oh, well... maybe he's INTERESTED in that, it must be more of an AUDITORY form of attention deficit!) the great psychologist also notices that "He blinks a lot and doesn't make eye contact... and he's tapping his fingers and fidgeting! it's abnormal for a 15 year old boy to show signs of boredom and impatience in a boring, long meeting! I'm gonna go ahead and say he has ADHD, even though he doesn't have behavioural problems and just sits draws and doesnt apply himself! he's not hyperactive... he's... he's HYPOactive! Shazam! Here's your diagnosis, please give a call to my colleague Dr. Feelgood and set your appointment!

then the real doctor, real doctor touches my balls, flirts with my mother and writes a script. Followup a few months later... "so i hear Zap is doing his homework and cleaning his room! he went from 180 to 140 lbs in a few months! No worries there, weight loss is normal! i own a 100,000 dollar coupe with an twelve cylinder engine!" keep going, grades skyrocket... down to 115 lbs at 6'0, doctor still writing those scripts "losing baby fat" I'm like forcing myself to eat a piece of bologna so I don't die irl, screaming fights with my dad so bad I can taste blood in my mouth, just smashing shit up... it really was quite traumatizing to me and my whole family. They all just wanted me to be a robot, academic intellectual sort of person but the truth is I'm supposed to be a farmer like all my ancestors.

Not really. It was over diagnosed and prolly still is in the US. Problems tend to arise when doctors have a financial motive to prescribe any specific drug. Adderal shouldn't ever be the first drug to treat ADD and monitoring for side-effects like weight loss is standard when people know what they are doing. There are a lot of bad doctors. Either they are incompetent or they simply don't care.

It should also be added that it's not really the drugs fault that people suck at using them. I'm all for blaming inanimate objects for doing stuff, but i just don't understand how it's possible.

yeah if a drug is out a while that has cheaper generic option (like ritalin when i was diagnosed) they push the new thing. Like I said, they are literally evil. Deserving of eternal hell. If any of you has kids and somebody wants to put them on one of these amphetamine clones, please don't... at least try it first, it's a fucking drug drug. I'm 34, go to a site where kids hang out... they're all on this shit now. It's just a casual thing, like, "oh shit i gotta study for finals lol my friend gave me adderall" literally EVERY kid under 25 has a friend on it. On top of the kids on speed, 1 in 6 adults is on some kind of psychiatric medicine. It's all bullshit. It's like something out of a sci fi book. It's completely fucked and wrong. And also, Sandy Hook, Columbine, the asian Virginia kid, probably Paddock, the colorado movie shooter... thanks Psychiatric Medicine

people are unhappy in the modern world and we are supposed to take pills to hide our thoughts and feelings so we can continue to work. They put drug commercials on TV "ask your doctor about..." i remember one for "shift work disorder" or something... basically a pill for people who have to work the night shift? I always wondered, do you think some guy working 3rd shift at a grocery store saw that commercial and called up a doctor and said, "hey i saw this commercial on TV about the night shift disorder. i work the night shift, and I'm interested in taking this new drug I saw in a commercial watching Dog the Bounty Hunter in the break room at 3 am."

Yea it's pretty fucked up and no one seems to learn anything about the last drug epidemic ever. Stimulants have hit epidemic levels at least twice already. First as miracle weight cure or to just cheer the day of a bored housewife and few decades later as cure for ADHD/ADD. Somewhere between those were barbiturates and benzos. After came the opiates.

It's not all just the lobbying that enabled marketing and other associated crap since there have been issues even before that, but it's not helping and it enables the problems to hit faster and in a larger scale. Part of the issue is that people still trust their doctors unconditionally. Sometimes they might know better, but what good does it do if they care about their bottom line more than your well being.

All of the aforementioned drug families have a definite place in medicine for now except barbiturates (other drugs do what they do better with less dying as a side effect). It's just that while they are vital for some patients they are detrimental to others. The job part of the doctors is finding out which one it is. You can't really have too much push or pull towards either over prescribing or under prescribing. Otherwise it fucks up with the balance.

I'm not one of those whack jobs who distrusts all modern medicine and/or is paranoid about every medicatio. However, I also realize that many doctors are either incompetent, disinterested, or corrupt, and I want to do research myself before taking anything that's prescribed.

Often the "cure" really is worse than the malady -- especially if the cure is incorrect to begin with.
