Paddock had been planning to do this for a while, and on several occasions had rented out rooms overlooking concerts, including a week earlier at Life is Beautiful, but never went through with it. Quite possible he backed out each time, until Route 91. IMO there are 3 possible scenarios...
1) He was just rehearsing, doing r & d.
2) He felt his casualty rate would be low, maybe limited avenues of escape
3) He lost his nerve and backed out
The night in question he gets pretty wasted. Well documented he was a heavy drinker. Maybe is running really bad over the course of his trip, very pissed.. contemplating doing what he set out to do. Maybe having second thoughts. Has all his calculations worked out... but... Then he sees the security guard in the hall, sets off his anger at Mandalay, or maybe he had a rift with security earlier, or just hates security guards..... and just says "fuck it", kill the security guard and go to town... shoots the security guard and fires multiple shots into the hallway... Might as well see how awesome those cameras work that he set up...

Ratta tat tat... Drunkenly shoots at fuel tanks, too fucked up to realize he knows that's pointless without the tracer bullets he drove ten hours to AZ to get and failed...
Shooting wildly into crowd... pauses, can't believe what he's doing.. Has another "ah, fuck it" moment.... shoots wildly into crowd again... that probably happened a few times until finally the reality of what he'd done sets in... onset of massive depression and anger... later world...
Can't wait to see his BAC and what his wins/losses were that week.
Also, pretty evident now someone at Mandalay Bay security fucked up massively. It's the only thing that makes sense. Need to know when the first call from Mandalay went in to Metro. That will tell a lot.
