It's just a psychological/social necessity. When Germany lost the war, they outlawed everything Nazi, which was a critical element behind them becoming a beacon of humanitarian progress in the following decades.

California is a net contributor to the federal treasury. The biggest takers are all red states. Alaska, Texas, the interior west.
