Druff's claim that franchise owners are notoriously cheap just doesn't strike me as quite right. The model is cheap, sure.

There is a local McDonalds owner who has a few stores. The guy happens to be black. Bully for him. He spends lavishly on his properties. Particularly, landscaping. Like some frigging botanical garden. Replants the grounds in its entirety each season. He is certainly not cheap.

He buys tired locations and revamps them. He's killing it as evidenced by his growth.

Second example I am aware of is a local Dunkin Donuts franchisee. His parents gave him one location upon graduation. Guy must have a dozen now. Each location is top shelf.

How much does a new Dunkin Donuts location cost to franchise? A million? Is that cheap?

Is the fast food model a low margin business by definition, sure. Is there big money to be made? Of course.

Does Willie's guy give a shit? Who knows? Find out.

Did TonyBags ever meet his owner?
Franchise owners are almost always cheap because they only give a shit about their individual store, and not the brand.

This is why In-N-Out owns so hard in California. They have no franchised units. They assert very tough standards upon each location. They overpay everyone, but will fire any employee who even shows the slightest sign of being lousy. They make bank, because people have learned to expect quality and excellent service.

The typical franchisee buys a known brand with dollar signs in his eyes, assuming that name recognition will be a free ticket to easy money rolling in. Then reality sets in.
He has so many expenses, much of which goes to the corporation, that it's often tough to make any kind of profit. This sometimes leads to the owner himself working as manager (thus cutting out one salary, and sometimes making the difference between being profitable and not profitable).

There are countless stories of franchise owners being laughably cheap with napkins, ketchups, and other mainstays of fast food which most people assume to be unlimited and easy to acquire for the customer.

My legendary tomatoes on the side story at Subway? That was a franchise (as are almost all Subways).

Franchise owners are also incredibly short-sighted. They will usually save a penny now, even if it means costing themselves ten dollars down the line. They don't think long term. When Willie asks for his $6 back, along with further concessions, the owner will likely see money out of his pocket rather than perhaps earning a customer for life.

Franchise owners also often suffer from "King of the Castle" syndrome -- where asserting power becomes more important than making money, even if the business is struggling. Of course, they don't believe their power trips are costing them money, but instead rationalize to themselves why it is so important to assert the power they think they have. Sometimes this is a defense mechanism to the business struggling. "I may be losing money here, but at least nobody is going to tell me what to do in my own restaurant!"

Corporate tends to be very different. They care about the brand. They don't pinch pennies on inexpensive, individual items such as napkins and ketchups.

    Or, simply put:

Franchise owner: "I don't want to give Willie money out of my pocket, and I'm not sure I even want a guy like him as a customer in the future."

Corporate: "Giving Willie his money back and some gift cards will restore Willie's faith in the Arby's brand, and it will make him more likely to visit Arby's all over the country for the rest of his life."

If you ever have a choice between a franchised chain and a corporate chain of the same type, always go corporate.

BTW you should always feel good about getting a horrible employee fired. You are doing everyone a favor. It is highly unlikely that your bad experience with him was the only one (and even more unlikely that he will be a model employee going forward.)

Totally different situation, but a number of years ago, a friend of mine was moving, and one of his unused vanity phone numbers was about to go to waste. I asked him if he could transfer it to me, and he said yes. Unfortunately, this transfer process was WAY tougher than it should have been, for reasons I won't bother getting into. It took a fucking eternity to get it right, mainly thanks to incompetence on the part of his phone company and my company (AT&T).

Finally, the process seemed to be near the end, and I just needed AT&T to clear it and flag it as ready to be ported to me. I called up and the main rep was clueless, so I asked for a supervisor. The supervisor immediately got nasty with me, and told me that he "knows this is fraud". I tried countless times to have him go and read all the notes which established that it was 100% legit, but he kept interrupting me. "I know fraud when I see it. I don't need to read any notes." He was so arrogant and condescending. But the worst came at the end. "I'm tagging this as fraud, and the number will be returned to the general pool within 7 days. If you're smart, you won't pursue this, or you'll be going to prison. I'm leaving the line. Goodbye."

Obviously I was both furious at him AND fearful that all my work to get this number would go to waste. I frantically called back AT&T and found someone to undo his fraud tag. However, I also wanted this guy's ass fired for this shit. I had them track down his direct supervisor, and she called me back. She told me that she pulled the call and was shocked at what she heard. "We just promoted him to supervisor, and apparently he can't handle it. In fact, this shows he can't handle any kind of customer service call. I can't officially tell you what's going to happen, but I can assure you that you won't be running into him again when you call AT&T in the future."

Incredibly satisfying, but even more satisfying because I knew he wouldn't be fucking with any other customers in the future.

You should feel the same way about Tim.

BTW, it is rare that an otherwise great employee is just stealing a bit extra for himself from the register. Usually shit workers and dishonest workers are one and the same.

Not everyone can have a life that alternates between grinding $3 rebuys at negative ROI and living in a tiny cubicle on a ship for months at a time.

It's health department approved and enables us to set up and sell at special events. Every day we set up in front of a local high school and sell $600-$700 worth of pizza, drinks and chips in about 35 minutes. I have an amazing relationship with the school administration so they welcome us with open arms. I buy 30 pack boxes of Frito Lay chips for $12 each and sell them for $1 per bag. We go thru 4 boxes daily. Anyways a few weeks back a kid grabs a bag and then shows me that there was a small hole in it, so I tell him to grab another one. He does and again a hole in the bag. I then look thru the box and find 6 or 7 more with holes in them. So I pull the entire box and then I notice rat droppings in the bottom of the box. These were boxes that I had picked up from a Smart N Final that morning. I called the quality assurance number for Frito Lay and was pleasantly surprised how professionally and seriously they took it. My call was immediately escalated to someone higher up the food chain. I was asked a lot of questions about where I bought them, etc and was told that they would be inspecting their warehouse facilities as well as contacting the retail location to arrange an inspection. I wasn't looking for nor did I ask for any compensation other then a refund on my purchase price. I was told to simply return the remainder of the box to the retail location for a refund. A couple of days later I received an apology letter from Frito Lay and a $50 AMEX gift card. The letter also highlighted steps they had taken to ensure it would never happen again. I think this was a textbook example of a large company doing a great job handling a potentially damaging situation.

It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

so basically last night i was hungry and went to go try to find a fast food place that was open. i initially headed towards taco bell, but they were closed

i was just driving down the road and saw that arby's was open and had a car in the drive-through so i pulled in

i ordered a beef and cheddar and a small curly fry - the total came to $6.21

i pull up to the window and i read that it closes at 11pm (it was 10:45pm)

i felt like a piece of shit and normally try to avoid going to places that are about to close, but because it was memorial day and one of the few places open i figured i prolly wasn't the only one showing up right before close (like the previous car i saw in the drive-through)

so anyway, i paid for my food in cash with exact change and i thought it was odd the way the guy handed me my food - almost overly nice and seemed to look at me unusually long after handing the food over. i had a bad feeling about my order already

i get home and open it up and take off the bun to see if the food was fucked with and it looked fine besides not having cheese that i ordered but whatever

i began to eat it and the first couple bites were fine, and then it wasn't. i looked at the sandwich again and noticed a bunch of hard, flaky meat on the bottom of the sandwich and also a bigger piece of meat that looked like dark, two week old beef jerky

so i look in the bag for the receipt and as i suspected there wasn't one - this guy not only fucked with my food, he voided it out and pocketed the cash

i kept the bag of food exactly as it was a and put it in the fridge and then brought it into the arbys today and asked for a manager

she was just a shift manager with no real power but every damn employee came up to the front to look at it and thought it was fucked up, they also told me the employee's name was "tim", and they didn't seem overly surprised. one even said to another employee "he was prolly high af" or something to that affect

anyway they actually called the district manager and he told them to give me his number and have me call him right away - they also looked up the records for the previous night and there was no record of my order

anyway, i still have the sandwich and i am supposed to meet the district manager tomorrow at 4, so...what is my play???

obviously going to get my money back, but even if he offers a bunch of gift cards it's not like i would be overly excited to use them - for awhile i'm going to have the memory of eating that shit interfering with me enjoying anything from arbys, and also isn't a big enough deal to actually go through the time and effort to sue them

what would druff/everyone else do if it was you?
Since he voided the order and he couldn't get the food what he did was put together whatever he could find and shove it in the bag and give it to you so he could pocket the money...
There's a good chance he probably took it out of food waste

Other than a couple of free lunches the district manager isn't going to give you much but f*** it take the free lunches it was an anomaly the food is actually good at Arby's better than Taco Bell

I think you are dismissing the Gift Certificates too soon. Arbys actually has a good menu now, lots of sandwiches especially their Market Fresh stuff. I semi blame you in all this Willie, you should know better than to ever go into a fast food place after 9pm, let alone a few minutes before closing. Take the $50 GC they give and go to Arbys at lunch and you will be fine.

Honestly, I would go to a gas station at 10:45 and buy a microwavable cheeseburger than go to a fast food place staffed by a bunch of teenagers. You know those fuckers are literally picking their nose counting down to 11pm. As a rule of thumb, I only go to fast food places at the busy times, generally they are only touching food as they are so busy. At 10:45 the guy cleaning the bathroom might be making your sandwich 2 minutes later and you know he never took the time to wash his hands. Even worse, he might have just popped a zit on his arm when you ordered. Only go to fast food places in peak times, and NEVER before closing.

You learned a valuable lesson here Willie.
