I need to get in on this, been reading drone forums for a week straight, like I always do when I find new shit to obsess about. Im sure once I get one it will get boring real fuckin fast.

Want Phantom 4 or Mavic leaning heavily toward the Mavic, Im sure that will change a few times before pulling the trigger

Flew about 2/5 of a mile out towards the mountains in a remote area which would be hard to retrieve the drone if it were to vanish (or even know where it went).

I had it about 210 feet in the air, which I thought was enough for the line-of-sight communication. There was a hill in front of me, but it was much lower than 210 feet (probably 60 feet), and I didn't think it was in the way.

I was flying toward the mountain an then the dreaded lost signal notification appeared.

My heart started racing, and I was in like this state of panic that my new, expensive drone was gone after just 4 flights.

I started hoping the auto return to home function worked. I went as far as I could to the front of the ridge, to perhaps get back in range.

A glimmer of hope, as it made contact again. But it lost within about a second.

I issued a return-to-home command which was not received.

Then it reappeared on the screen a few seconds later, received return-to-home from just earlier, and came back.

    Phew!

I then tried to fly it in the other direction, which was not hindered by hills and much easier to find and retrieve the drone if it were to go down (basically it was parallel with the road). It flew 3/5 of a mile with no problem, and I brought it back.

But now I'm scared to fly in that mountainous direction again. I wonder if I just needed to be higher... or if perhaps I should start from the top of that other hill (though it's too muddy to get up there right now).

Would it be wise for me to perform a test of auto-return-home by taking it out to a "safe" area, and then turning off the controller? Or am I potentially bringing on a flyaway by doing this?

Also I forgot to hit "record" so I can't go back and look at what happened.

Give your flight log to the gurus on phantom pilots and they will tell you exactly what you funked up.

Not owning one but reading forums like a mad man I'm 90 % sure you lost line of sight

So what is the farthest anyone has flown their drone away from themselves?

I did like 3300 feet today, and it was a strange feeling having it so far away.

Druff, are you planning to post any footage or editted drone video to YouTube?

Druff, watch out for crazy women possibly assaulting you if you buzz your drone too low over a beach.

The craft can carry a passenger weighing up to 220 pounds and a small suitcase. After buckling into its race-car-style seat, the craft's sole passenger selects a destination on a touch-screen pad in front of the seat and the drone flies there automatically.

The drone, which has a battery allowing for a half-hour flight time and a range of up to 50 kilometres, will be monitored remotely by a control room on the ground. It has a top speed of 160 km/h, but authorities say it will be operated typically at 100 km/h.

theres an interesting development put on the table by this article; drone development agendas are starting to de-prioritize consumers and target more industrial markets.

eg the hot new tech is drones designed for inspecting cell towers, bridges, so on, performing search and rescue, and imbued with autonomous aircraft avoidance systems.

very good chance this trend scales towards what we saw in abu dhabi recently, where drone taxies are now a thing. could be the missing link to full on flying cars.

Been flying it for almost 2 months now, about twice a week.

Had to replace the filter ($38) when it got scratched, but aside from that, no other damage.

No other near losses of the drone, either.

I have kept it within a mile of my location though.

Still feels a little weird to look up and see how high it is, but I realize that it's mostly an illusion. The drone is so small that it looks way higher than it actually is.

I am afraid to fly it over roads or houses (especially houses), in case it crashes somehow. I don't want it to bust through a roof and kill someone.

Sadly, more and more areas are enacting "no drones" rules, so drone flying as a hobby seems like it might die soon.

It actually does have some utilitarian purpose, such as if you need to see your roof or trees without actually having to climb up there.

I do wish it would auto-record when I start flying, as I sometimes I forget to turn on record mode.

Or is there an option for that?

I was commuting back to the Valley from work and have to drive over the Mogollon Rim.

Got some pretty sweet footage just north of Strawberry Valley, right off the 87.

Uploading now, will post shortly. It's just raw footage, not edited or any music added.

If you just uploaded it, then it might convert itself to a higher res.

That's how it worked for me.

    Questions:

    1) How high did you take it? Looks above 400 feet. When I go to around 400, things on the ground look a lot bigger than that.

    2) How did you do the effect like the drone was turning upside down? It looks more angled than a straight down shot.

    3) What was the farthest you got from where you were standing?

I was close to 1000 feet I believe. I didn't care, it's an extremely rural area with no air traffic in the area.

I'm not sure what effect you are talking about...lol. Let me know what time mark and I'll try and let you know what I did.

Farthest I went was just under a half mile there, about 2000 feet out.
