Called the port agent at human resources with my union on Monday this week and exclaimed proudly (3 months later) 'I'm finally done !' and my job has been shipped to the Bay Area for pick up.

$12,700 a month with full benefits as a department head.

I'm based out of Cape Canaveral, Florida with (MSC) Military Sealift Command.

Most of the time my ship is in port, but it does head out off the coast of Panama, Florida Keys and Cuba for strategical ops several times a year.

It's a US Navy support vessel tasked specifically for supporting submarine navigation systems testing, and providing ballistic missile testing support services for the Navy

flying out probably Tuesday to Orlando as soon as hurricane Matthew burns out

FYI you're not factoring in 4-6 hours of overtime daily, in addition to generous vacation pay benefits. The 44K is merely a BASE wage

However, I will concede that my monthly pay is going to be closer to 11K a month only because my particular vessel is usually shoreside and hazard pay is a non factor unless we are at sea

oh and moron....I don't work directly for MSC, I'm working for a government subcontractor under their umbrella

Do you not realize that the National Maritime Union and MSC represent literally dozens of foreign and domestic shipping companies with a variety of contracts and pay ranges ?

In addition, I'm not bound to just ship with MSC, there are countless other companies within the maritime industry that pay much better....Some Chief Stewards for standard contract companies like Matson, Sealand and APL are paid as much as $18,000 a month

I'm stoked to be back in this industry, and have a wide variety of options for where and when I choose to ship out in the future...and have very well paying stable employment for as long as I want it.
