First off, I have to echo the sentiments expressed by others here. Work long enough to bank at least 100k. Don't bail out at 50k. As you saw with 36k, 50k isn't going to get you too far. Having a bankroll before starting pretty much any self-funded venture is very important.

Second, you mentioned the "intrusive questioning" as part of the process to get your credentials. Did any of the questioning have to do with forum stuff? Not joking here... I'm seriously wondering that. If so, what did they ask? Did PFA come up?

As a piece of advice just as you mentioned how money goes fast you might want to grind the job for a few extra months because that could buy you several months more back in Mexico along with giving you a little better of a roll for playing on Stars.

some random representative from DHS contacted me on my cell phone 3 weeks after I had paid my fee and submitted my application looking to verify my 'home address' and asked me to confirm my birthday and the last 4 of of my social security number.

I thought it was odd because I was getting emails from them on the status of my TWIC card processing on a daily basis and everything seemed fine

Not exactly sure why after 3 weeks into the process I was getting this call....but I gave the rep my info and my card arrived about 2 weeks later

I'd been squeaking out a couple grand a month building WordPress websites for small business owners, but the truth of the matter is that I fucking hate web design.

Actually its more the fact I despise cold calling and prospecting for new clients, and also that after spending the better part of 25 years in various sales positions, I can emphatically state with conviction that web design clients are the biggest pain in the ass ever.

I'm actually decent at the creative aspect of the business, and started getting pretty good at CSS, but I find it beyond tedious to sit in front of my computer all day uploading images, writing meaningless brain-dead content, and dealing with impatient, rude and demanding clients (big shout out to Robert Pickering)

That particular experience left a pretty sour taste in my mouth, and was one of the the mitigating factors in my decision to get the fuck of website design once and for all.

So trying to grow a small web development company was not an option anymore

Slapping together WordPress sites doesn't make you a web developer any more than dropping Chicken McNuggets into a deep fryer makes you a chef.

I spent over a year in culinary school and shipped out as a Chief Cook and Chief Steward for over 3 years feeding up to 90 hungry marines 3 times a day for 6 months straight.

As far as website design is concerned, I never claimed to be an expert website developer or master coder, but I was competent enough in terms of design and graphics to market my services confidently
