Can netflix pull off stuff like this that can't be done on broadcast because of certain rules, or did they just have a big enough budget to account for such songs?

Usually those songs come bundled together in catalogs. So if Netflix purchased rights to a catalog for Series A, chances are it ponied up a bit more and secured rights to use them in Series B, C, so on. No one really licenses individual songs.

Whats more, Netflix has some of the deepest pockets in Silicon Valley, and thats :realtalk.

This show panders to someone my age on so many levels (late 70s-early 80s kids, bikes, D&D, forts, basically my childhood soundtrack, supernatural elements, horror elements, an actress I used to want to bone, whole facets of the show being homages to shows and films that developed me into who i am, and that I hold dear to my heart etc.....) but whats really amazing is this show has been 100% loved by every member of my family. A really rare feat in our house.

Really well done, can't wait for season 2. I had heard about this series from others, but wasn't until this thread did I devour the first season in 2 days.

So a 2 day marathon. So much homage. The super fat serif titles and holy shit I thought they got John Carpenter himself to do the title track. Great work by neurotic Winona, reminded me of my mom. The whole beginning sequence was ET, the kids were Goonies and everything else was Poltergeist: The Road Trip. Felt so Spielberg he should sue. That being said, one of my favorite things to drop on the heads of my players was the mother fucking Demogorgon.

Just remember, you can't kill a monster from another plane on Earth, only dispell it. You have to kill it on the plane it came from.

Two big holes for me on the plot that are bugging me that are probably nothing but I can't shake them

    **SPOILERS**

    1. Winona meets 11's mom. Winona then meets 11 for the first time. Winona in no way, shape or form communicates that she has met 11's mom.
I mean I guess there would be things that would be more out of character for her to do, but I can't find one. In that spot, she 100% tells 11 that she met her mom and you have a whole subplot right there.

    2. Nancy and Johnathan at the house after their prolonged battle with the demogorgon in ep8, leave the house following the lights they mostly consider to be 'not the demogorgon', and then fuck off not to be heard from again. So they fight this big beast, presumably kill it, then.. do nothing. *crickets*

    Oh and..

    Oh and..

While Stranger Things character Will Byers was trying to figure out how to make it out of the Upside Down, many fans were attempting to solve a mystery of their own: Will's sexual orientation. Following the ongoing conversation concerning his character's sexual identity, child actor Noah Scnapp finally broke his silence and explained what many fans may have been "missing."

"I’ve been reading stuff for a while. I think everyone here is missing the point," Schnapp wrote in a long winded post on Instagram on Oct. 16. The note was attached to a screenshot from Twitter, in which fans were questioning whether Will was gay in the series. "An author called Gary Schmidt came to speak at our school this week and he said that good stories aren’t supposed to leave you with answers because then you never question yourself and you forget about it," he continued. "A good book, or a good show leaves a lot of unanswered questions but makes you think. Which is what you are all doing. For me, Will being gay or not is besides the point. "

Schnapp also questioned what attributes or mannerisms made fans believe his character was gay. "Stranger Things is a show about a bunch of kids who are outsiders and find each other because they have been bullied in some way or are different," he added. "Does being sensitive, or a loner, or a teenager who likes photography, or a girl with red hair and big glasses, make you gay? I'm only 12 but I do know we all relate to being different. And that's why I think the Duffers wrote the show the way they did. So you can ask all these questions." As for the answer to everyone's question, Schnapp says he hopes "the real answer never comes out!"

Since the series premiere in July, popular threads on Reddit and other message boards began discussing a theme of sexuality explored throughout the series. Daniel Reynolds, a writer for The Advocate penned a lengthy essay that examined homophobia in the show, citing Will and Barb as examples of "queer" characters. Netflix has ordered a second season of Stranger Things that is set to air some time in 2017. So fans will just have to wait until then to see if the next season sheds any more light on the subject.
