CBS News Reporter Sopan Deb Arrested While Covering Donald Trump Rally
He's charged with resisting arrest despite no evidence of doing so.

CBS News reporter Sopan Deb was arrested Friday night while covering protests surrounding Donald Trump's canceled rally in Chicago.

Deb, who has covered the Republican presidential front-runner's candidacy since last summer, was filming video of a man whose face was bloody and lying on the ground near police at the time of his arrest, according to a "CBS This Morning" report Saturday.

"Deb continued to roll as police kept watch," the CBS report noted. "Without warning, Deb was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground."

A police officer placed his boot on Deb's neck to keep him in place on the ground, according to the account he provided his network.

Illinois State Police charged Deb with resisting arrest though the network reported that neither his video, nor that of a nearby film crew, showed any sign of resistance. The reporter can also be seen on video identifying himself as a credentialed member of the media.

Sopan Deb was arrested despite identifying as a member of the media. Deb later recovered his camera, which was left on the ground as police arrested him. His arrest was also captured on Fox News during its coverage outside the venue at the University of Illinois.


Despite having covered Trump's campaign from the start, Deb was clearly struck by the clashes between supporters and protesters. He last tweeted:


Reporters have faced increasing difficulties covering Trump's often raucous events, given the campaign's severe restrictions on their movements. Organizers have at times forced them to remain in a "press pen" at events and faced hostility directed at them from the candidate and some supporters.

It isn't amazing. It's childish. It's something an internet troll would do, not someone who has a pretty legit shot at being POTUS. As for what his tweet means, it means Trump is basically trying to incite violence and someone is gonna end up dead before too long. It also means Trump is unfit to be a public servant. That's all.


And before anyone gets their panties in a wad, I know I've joked about Trump and made fun of him a bit, but that was all funny ha ha and I didn't have a huge problem with him (and frankly I rather enjoyed what he did to Jeb, Rand, Cruz, Marco, Samuel L Jackson, the media, et al). This shit, on the other hand, is retarded and dangerous. I get that Trump is a "loose cannon" and not "politically correct", but the dude needs to start acting like the front runner he is and tell everyone to chill the fuck out.

At the end of the day no matter how fucked up I am at least I don't buy in or give attention to this "certain candidates are different than others Republicans vs. Democrats bull shit" one iota. I have a no trump no hillary bet which i accepted with way too small odds. (people on this site thought I got too good of a deal) I just couldn't for a second believe the squares would ever go for The Donald or the epitome of evil. Even the most trapped by the matrix people I meet seem to know about all her sexual assaults and murders. The same people seem to hate Trump as well. I just don't get it. The thought of having the guy from the apprentice as POTUS would have exploded my brain if it happened when I was 18 and really into all this shit. It really does slay me even as a person that expects the dumbest shit ever to happen. At this point based on Vegas odds the redneck women of facebook saying Obama stays in office is my only out. But if something like that happened then the money I win is worthless. I'm fucked.


I don't really follow but do any of the other camps go after Trump for his media whoring past? If I was Hillary and this was a real thing I'd refer to Trump as "The Donald" every single time she said his name. I swear the media has erased peoples memories from the "You're Fired" days. Of course all this could be happening. I just don't know. Ronald Reagan was a famous actor and he got voted in so I guess it's possible. He seemed like a real human and not a cartoon character though. It mystifies me that the current odds for Trump are so low. He's basically the mainstream version of Phil Hellmuth. I will never get it. Every once in a while people will tell me that it's the things Trump is talking about now that makes them want to vote for him... it makes me want to vomit all over the floor each time. How old and how many election cycles do you have to fucking endure to learn that it politicians say one thing and do another. I look at people that vote with the same disdain/mystification as those signing up for the military. Trump Kansas City rally, where protesters decided to block traffic and wouldnt leave the street after repeated warnings







From the KC Police Chief:


Police were dealing with a bomb threat reported inside the Midland Theater as the rally started. At about the same time, I heard officers on the radio saying they were starting to get surrounded by the people outside. The Trump protesters were on both sides of Main Street. They started encroaching onto the street. The opposing sides periodically tried to come together, and officers found themselves breaking up more and more disturbances. The officers called in our Mounted Patrol for back up to break the two groups apart and get them out of the street. In the course of that, a police horse was assaulted. More officers were called in to help maintain safety and order. Some of the people gathered outside began to put on personal protective equipment (gas masks). Several of them tried to rush the front doors of the theater, blocking Main Street in the process.

Police issued repeated commands to stay out of the street. They warned that pepper spray would be used if those gathered didn’t follow the commands. People had ample opportunity to back up or disperse. Police tried to get them out of the street for three minutes. Those three minutes were just when they were in the street itself. Tensions had been building before that on the sidewalk. They blocked traffic and compromised safety. Some cars caught in the back-up were surrounded. When the crowd refused to obey police commands, officers had to deploy pepper spray on two occasions throughout the evening.

A total of four people were arrested. Given the circumstances, our officers exercised great restraint. And this morning, no windows are boarded up downtown. No one suffered any injuries beyond the temporary discomfort of pepper spray. The National Guard is not in Kansas City today to restore order.

People in the United States certainly have the right to peaceably assemble and express their views. And police were there to ensure that last night. Citizens do not, however, have the right to put others' safety at risk, destroy property or violate the law. The officers acted to facilitate an environment where law-abiding people could exercise their freedoms safely. And keep in mind that downtown was buzzing last night with people who had nothing to do with the Trump rally, and we had to ensure their safety, as well. There were tens of thousands of people gathered there for the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament and the Mecum Auto Auction, among other events. If events had spiraled out of control, they could have been endangered, too. Our officers acted appropriately to keep a volatile situation under control, and they kept people and property safe. I’m proud of them.
