Kind of worried about the Badguy. Normally he'd be here busting Druff's balls about this. I got dodging child support -300, incarcerated +160, Grandma Rosa passed on and he has no internet access +105, he got a 9-5 +10000, killed by bookie +240, riding Pirates ML all year and living in 5* hotels with top shelf escorts +160

The Marlins man keeps changing hats too. Is this tool really getting sponsorships now?
It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

As you know, the Royals lost three of four games in Toronto last weekend. That got overshadowed by the beanball controversy, Twitter sniping, and return of the incredibly stupid “Royals are thugs!!!” storyline, but it did happen. And it brought up what I think is a fair question. Given that the Royals have struggled in New York, Houston, and now Toronto, should their road struggles against good teams be a concern when we think about their playoff chances?

It’s easy to see why it could be a concern. Of the 10 games the Royals have played in those three cities, they won one of them. And that was by one run after a comeback from a 5-1 deficit. And while Toronto is a in a dogfight for the last wild-card spot, the other two are pretty good bets to make the playoffs. The Royals can’t count on winning all their home games in the playoffs, so to advance they will probably have to win a few games in those cities.

Of course, the counterpoint is that these are good teams. Naturally, it’s difficult to beat them, and moreso on the road.

I think the easiest way to look at this is simply to figure out how other teams are doing when they play on the road against good teams. Entering play Monday, 14 of the 30 major league teams had records above .500. I suppose you could argue a team that’s only a game or two above .500 is not precisely “good,” but it’s a simple way to group them. Seven teams in each league are above .500 (interestingly, at least to me, no one is exactly at .500).

When the Royals have played winning teams on the road this year, they are 9-15. That sounds terrible, right? Well, only one of the teams I looked at has a winning record on the road against teams above .500. Care to guess? Nope. No. Wrong again. It’s the Chicago Cubs, at 11-10.

In fact, the Royals’ 9-15 mark is the same as the Yankees’ total. It’s the same as Toronto’s. It’s a better win percentage than Houston’s 5-11 record. It’s much better than the Angels’ 5-16. By winning percentage, the Royals are right in the middle of the pack of those 14 teams. And only one AL team is ahead of them. That would be the Twins, at 6-8. Here, see for yourself:

    ROAD RECORDS AGAINST WINNING TEAMS*
    TEAM W L PCT
    Minnesota 6 8 .429
    Kansas City9 15 .375
    NY Yankees9 15 .375
    Toronto 9 15 .375
    Houston 5 11 .313
    LA Angels 5 16 .238
    Baltimore 4 18 .182
    Chi Cubs 11 10 .524
    Washington9 10 .474
    St. Louis 13 16 .448
    San Francisco6 8 .429
    Pittsburgh 8 12 .400
    LA Dodgers7 13 .350
    NY Mets 9 18 .333
    *Through Sunday
Speaking of the Twins, if you still want to be concerned about the Royals’ road struggles, I should note that four of the nine wins have come in Minnesota. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad, on balance; it has helped them build a nice lead in the AL Central, but I don’t really expect the Twins to be a playoff opponent.

Without getting too deep into the research, I don’t think a poor record on the road against good teams disqualifies you from postseason success. Sorry to bring them up, but last year’s Giants went 12-15 in such games, including the wrong end of a three-game sweep in Kansas City. The Royals were 21-20 (yes, better than this year, but not a lot) in those games.

More interesting to me is how Kansas City stacks up against other teams on the other side of the equation: beating good teams at home. The Royals have a 14-8 mark in that situation. That’s pretty good; it is better than their overall win percentage this year (.636 to .600). But it doesn’t match up to Houston (18-5) or Toronto (16-6) or the Yankees (16-5). For the record, the Royals only managed to go 23-25 last year at home against winning teams (they played a lot more of those games since Detroit and Cleveland were both in that category last year).

And all those nice AL records pale in comparison to the Cardinals’ 18-3 mark. Yikes.

Here are the records against winning teams at home:

    HOME RECORDS AGAINST WINNING TEAMS*
    TEAM W L PCT
    Houston 18 5 .783
    NY Yankees16 5 .762
    Toronto 16 6 .727
    Kansas City14 8 .636
    Baltimore 11 10 .524
    LA Angels 8 8 .500
    Minnesota 11 11 .500
    St. Louis 18 3 .857
    San Francisco10 5 .667
    Pittsburgh 13 7 .650
    Chi Cubs 15 10 .600
    Washington15 12 .556
    LA Dodgers8 8 .500
    NY Mets 9 18 .333
    *Through Sunday
Anyway, my takeaway from that is that it is of utmost importance that the Royals finish with the best record in the American League. Sure, it didn’t help the Angels last year, but every little advantage should help. They should strive to avoid playing more games than necessary in Houston or Toronto or New York. We all know the playoffs are a dice roll. So this may not matter, but it’s still a concern in my mind. It’s OK to struggle against good teams on the road, and it’s a good sign that the Royals can beat good teams at home. But playoff games in those three cities are going to be scary.
It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

While nowhere near a certainty, it is looking like the two NL wildcards will be the Cubs and Pirates.

This makes the Dodgers/Giants battle even more important, as one of those two teams (more likely the Giants) won't make the playoffs at all.
