Square-cube law doesn't allow for simply scaling up a Phantom, but manned quadcopters have kinda sorta been done.

The 9 Strangest Flying Robots from the World’s Biggest Drone Show

At a drone conference in Atlanta, everyone was looking for the next big thing in UAV design. Here’s a look at some of the most interesting, innovative and outlandish drones Defense One came across.

Phantom III is real as fuck.

I've been putting off grabbing one of these for a month now, but damn, that totally has me about to snap buy.

Looks like a lot of fun... unfortunately I'm in Phoenix, and I don't think it will be safe operating temperatures from about May thru September.

I was skeptical that temperature would be an issue there but the specs put the high end at 104F... like seriously? Thats kinda shitty.

The mix of July 4th crowds & concerts, fireworks, terrorism (I'm Boston) & drones should result in some interesting news stories.

I have imagined a few scenarios. Here's one. In Boston a lot of highrises (in Boston that's only 30-40 stories) allow select employees and families up on the roof for a great view of the Esplanade & fireworks. Now the concert crowd is not allowed to bring & use drones but someone from a rooftop might.

The aerial shot of fireworks and city would be fantastic but widespread panic & SWAT response (Boston is gonna be on high alert) would make good video too.

I have actually been up on a highrise roof on the 4th. It's a great take. I could not believe they had gas grills going up there. Alcohol and fire on the roof with no fire protection seemed like a code issue.

Ended up pulling the trigger on a Phantom 3 Advanced. I was going to go for the Professional, but I'm not a professional photographer and don't really think I needed the 4K. Also grabbed an extra battery.

I was on the fence, but while I was at the local hobby store, some old guy in his 50s brought his in to get some help. I got to check it out and mess around, it was fun as hell. Think I have a nice new hobby to get into... either that or it's going to sit and collect dust after a month. I'll update with pics and vids.

Going through the manual right now and charging up. Looking forward to it's inaugural flight.

So shit is mad fun, but for someone that doesn't really like a lot of attention, I've already gotten cops called twice and DPS rolled up on me once when I was shooting at a park near the freeway.

I will say, when the right opportunities present themselves, you can get some really sick shots and vid. I'm not much of a photographer or one to brag, but I think some of these pics I shot are pretty legit.

I've only gotten it out a half mile, and I've gotten altitude to 1200ft once. Unfortunately, being in the city brings a lot of interference and I lose signal with the DJI Lightbridge, and well, I just get kind of uneasy flying without LOS, no visual HUD, and just trusting that the 'return to home" feature is going to pan out (it has, on well over 50 flights at this point).

As far as battery time goes, I'm getting 20-22 minutes right now. I'll see how that progresses down the road. $100 for a spare battery isn't that big a deal IMO.

Oh and I've been running this bitch in 105-110 degree weather on short 5-8 minute runs with no ill effect...

The main limiting factor is that my phone starts to overheat in those temps unless I'm in a shaded area...

So really, I think it's still worth buying if that was a big deal to you, cause honestly, I don't even wanna be out in these temps let alone flying a drone for several minutes.

Plus you can still get some sick pics once the sun is going down and you've got that golden hour light to work with, and heat isn't an issue then, even here in blazing hot Phoenix.

Avon, you're making me want to buy one.

I almost got a DJI Phantom 2, but I heard too many stories of it going rogue and just taking off.

I think that is what happened to Micon, in fact (though I think he also said he did something wrong with the line of sight.)

Has the Phantom 3 improved with the "not disappearing" issue?

How easy is it to control? I'm also afraid of spending 4 figures on this and crashing it.

My experience has been excellent thus far.

Everyone keeps telling me the 3 is heads above the Vision 2.

The Return to Home feature has worked perfect for me also. I'm pretty sure that was a big deal to DJI to get correct on this one.

The cons... I haven't personally dealt with it, but I have heard their customer service is absolutely HORRENDOUS.

But you're a smart guy... I feel like most the idiots complaining about bad experiences just don't use commonsense.

I have had two crashes due to me trying to be a hot dog at some low altitudes, but fortunately I remained relatively unscathed save for a small scratch or two. If I wasn't trying to be captain dipshit, those crashes would have never happened.

But it is very intuitive and user friendly... control is excellent IMO... worst come to worst, just let off both sticks and it will hover in place, then just raise altitude til you're out of whatever obstacle's way.

For the price, it really is a technical marvel in my opinion. I'm 35, and I don't really get excited about too many things anymore, but this thing has started to pique my creativity to levels I haven't seen since my late teens/early 20s lol.
