I just read the Slate piece and his blog about it.

I almost closed it when I read the nonsense of "... this country’s “war on drugs” could more accurately be described as a systematic effort to marginalize immigrants, minorities, and poor people, decade after decade."

The line about the "war on drugs" marginalizing minorities and poor people is garbage. Whether you support or oppose the war on drugs, it's fairly clear that its purpose has nothing to do with racism or class warfare. Statements like that are a bunch of hippy nonsense, and make it tough to take the writer seriously on everything else.

I've used my one conspiracy theory for the month already, but I believe this is a fact that has been well documented.

Crack cocaine was introduced or made available to the "public" by men with guns who also work for certain federal agencies.
