I have some experience with this since I've watched UFC since UFC 1 and have been to a few, from Mohegan to AC to Vegas (I grew up with and am still friends with Jorge Rivera). One of my most memorable trips was to the UFC in Vegas the weekend of the Patriots/Panthers Superbowl --sick fucking weekend where I ran into everyone from Chuck Zito to Johnny Cochrane (extremely funny story on that one I'll have to recount someday).

The atmospehere now is great but here are some tips:

    • Sit higher-up because the cage obstructs the view, first row balcony are the best seats.
    • Go to the weigh-in and whatever restaurant is close by in the casino because that's where the fighters go after the weigh-in
    • Go to the local bars (or sometimes an after party in a local night-club) and you can meet all the fighters too

I'd highly recommend going to the fights live, but just realize you are rolling the dice on who you sit near (lot of d-bags and wannabe tough guys in the stands at these) so I would go with a good sized group that includes at least a couple people that can handle themselves. I'm not saying you have a good chance of getting into a fight (there are hardly any in the stands) but if it's you and two other guys you might have a hard time telling the 12 drunks behind you to shut the fuck-up.

I attended UFC 5, back in 1995 in Detroit. I was sitting 12th row approximately, and there were more fights in the crowd than in the ring. I think there were 17 fights up in the seats all around Cobo arena.

The fights were nothing special. It was kind of a let down. Ken Shamrock vs. Dan Severn should have been a huge fight, however they decided to dance around most of the time and barely hit each other.

You are better off watching from home.
A lot has changed since UFC V, it's like saying you went to the WSOP in 1982.
I really want to go to a UFC fight live in the future. I occasionally will get together with friends for a card but have never really gotten into the sport. We used to go out to catch the fights at whatever bar/restaurant had them but stopped because the crowds were too redneck and military.

The drunken atmosphere at a place showing a fight is a scary one.

I flew back to the twin cities to see the Vikings-Packers monday night game in 2009, the first with Favre on the Vikes vs the pack. Great game but nothing too memorable. Stayed and snap-purchased tix for the next days game 163 of Tigers-Twins, due to them finishing the season tied. Best game I've ever seen live.

I've been to lots of events but watching some pro athelete do something amazing just doesn't compare to watching your kid score a goal.

I was at Giants Stadium on the cold December day in 2010 when rookie punter Matt Dodge punted straight to Desean Jackson leading to a miracle punt return that capped off an epic Giants game-ending (and season ending) collapse. That qualifies as "memorable".

Oh yeah, I was also at Super Bowl 42 in Arizona, and witnessed Eli Manning's scramble and David Tyree's amazing catch off his helmet, keeping the Giants' drive alive and on to victory.

Other than being able to say you were there when something like this happens, I would think you had to see the replay later to really appreciate how fucking sick that play was. From it being fourth & long, to the scramble & escape, to the throw & catch using his helmet, to the defender(Rodney Harrison)not being able to dislodge that ball, everything about it was improbable. There is no way anybody caught all the nuances of that play in real time while in a live setting. You had to see the replay to appreciate it as being as incredible as it really was.
This is probably true about any of those incredible I was there plays.
Definitely cool that you were there, that's for sure.
