That Pettis-Henderson fight was a great fight without that sick move Pettis pulled off.
I have some experience with this since I've watched UFC since UFC 1 and have been to a few, from Mohegan to AC to Vegas (I grew up with and am still friends with Jorge Rivera). One of my most memorable trips was to the UFC in Vegas the weekend of the Patriots/Panthers Superbowl --sick fucking weekend where I ran into everyone from Chuck Zito to Johnny Cochrane (extremely funny story on that one I'll have to recount someday).
The atmospehere now is great but here are some tips:
- Sit higher-up because the cage obstructs the view, first row balcony are the best seats.
- Go to the weigh-in and whatever restaurant is close by in the casino because that's where the fighters go after the weigh-in
- Go to the local bars (or sometimes an after party in a local night-club) and you can meet all the fighters too
I'd highly recommend going to the fights live, but just realize you are rolling the dice on who you sit near (lot of d-bags and wannabe tough guys in the stands at these) so I would go with a good sized group that includes at least a couple people that can handle themselves. I'm not saying you have a good chance of getting into a fight (there are hardly any in the stands) but if it's you and two other guys you might have a hard time telling the 12 drunks behind you to shut the fuck-up.
I attended UFC 5, back in 1995 in Detroit. I was sitting 12th row approximately, and there were more fights in the crowd than in the ring. I think there were 17 fights up in the seats all around Cobo arena.
The fights were nothing special. It was kind of a let down. Ken Shamrock vs. Dan Severn should have been a huge fight, however they decided to dance around most of the time and barely hit each other.
You are better off watching from home.
A lot has changed since UFC V, it's like saying you went to the WSOP in 1982.
