I cant help to wonder if he would be a better person and more sucessful if he had never touched the stuff.

you know fear and loathing style?

at the end of the day he can do what he wants no matter the counceling from frends and familey.
maybe, some people can be successful and use coke, hell whole industries were born from it, e.g. stockbrokers. I think eventually it catches up with everyone but some people can live in denial for a long fucking time.

I thought it was an interesting piece. Basically we are all addicted to something, otherwise we wouldn't be stuck
posting on poker message boards for the better part of a decade. Some people go Landon Mark with their addictions. Some people don't. I think most people don't, we just hear about the tragic cases.

I am on episode 4 now.

Fascinating stuff. If you have ever done coke before you can relate to a lot of what he says and his experiences. He was basically a rich kid growing up in NY, and it goes from there.

He talks about all types of other stuff as well relating to drugs, for anyone in their mid to late 30's it is a journey back in time through the drug culture growing up. Especially if you grew up on the East Coast in the general vicinity of NY or somewhere close.

One thing I have gathered is that when you do crack, you do a LOT more of it vs sniffing coke. The amounts he stated he has done in one binge session are somewhat alarming. I mean I can't even imagine consuming that amount of coke in one sitting, but he seems to have no issues with it. I think this is very dangerous, and he even mentioned feeling his heart beating irregular on numerous occasions.

For example he says he can go through an 8 ball in a few hours. That is insane. He also insinuates that when this happens he gets more. I am guessing an "average" binge is about 7 grams. He said the most he has ever done at one sitting is 12 grams over about 12 hours or so.

If I were to do some coke, I could make a gram last me all night long pretty much. He goes through that in an hour, sometime for 12 straight.

But his honesty is pretty amazing, and I actually agree with a lot of what he says in relation to the drug culture and how it is viewed from the "outside". He seems to be able to keep the demons at bay most of the time, but one wonders how long he can keep that up for.

Last episode is more poker boom related, Pauly goes through all the crazy stuff that was going on, how much money he was making and the drug/degenerate subculture around the World Series.

Pauly talks about how he got in 2 car accidents and developed an Oxy habit, which he is still fighting to this day. They both reveal at end how they hope this podcast and talking about it can help them stay away from the hard drugs that both of them battle cravings for.

    Awesome stuff.

Exactly, I'm taking him in the next deadpool.

Well the rich kid part explains his extremely weird rant on you.
It is wrong to steal $1000 from the big boys, but smoking crack is fine, in moderation.

Is this the same guy who got busted by Eric Molina on ESPN like 8 years ago and threw a hissy fit and looked like he was going to cry? If so, FUCK Shane Schonger that little cry baby bitch. I hope he OD's and fucking dies that curly haired drug addicted n-word fuck. If it wasn't him then kindly disregard my post.

    Toodles.

That was by far the best year ever for entertainment regarding the main event. You had Molina, the top top douche, fucking Jamie Gold and his dickswinging match with Molina. I think that dumb nig was leading early on then donked off all his chips in three hands that year. It was great, the high point of the Main Event imo.

It seemed like the players were fully realizing at that point that the squeaky wheel got the grease, so the louder and more in the public eye you were, the more poker sites would approach you and make you a site pro. Players would whore themselves out to get a patch and say they were the head pro at www.sockpuppetpoker.com and walruseswithbluntweapons.com

Who was that black guy I'm thinking of? Every other hand he left the table and was talking on his phone. Some dumb ass Italian guy came to the table and said they were going to bust his ass.

I'll donate $20 in the name of the first poster who comes up with the name of the black guy I'm thinking of in the next free roll.

It was a different time in poker back then. A better time. I never played much poker but I did watch religiously. I was poor then. If I had the money I do now I would have travelled to vegas for the main event no doubt. It's too bad those times will never come back.

I just read the Slate piece and his blog about it.

I almost closed it when I read the nonsense of "... this country’s “war on drugs” could more accurately be described as a systematic effort to marginalize immigrants, minorities, and poor people, decade after decade."

But I kept reading because I generally like Shaniac, and it was especially interesting to read a piece like this by someone I actually know, as opposed to some random.

I do give him credit for his honesty here, especially because he is not swearing off crack or bragging about his recovery from it. He is admitting that he will likely be smoking crack in 2014, albeit less of it than he did in 2013. He is correct that publishing such an article under his real name is likely to have some real-life repercussions, especially because it seems he is not wealthy enough to be retired and might have to find real employment at some point.

The line about the "war on drugs" marginalizing minorities and poor people is garbage. Whether you support or oppose the war on drugs, it's fairly clear that its purpose has nothing to do with racism or class warfare. Statements like that are a bunch of hippy nonsense, and make it tough to take the writer seriously on everything else.

However, given that most of the piece is about Shane's own experience with crack, rather than an editorial about US drug policy, I will ignore that and comment on the main part of what he was getting across.

Basically, while Shane was brave to post this honest assessment of his 15-year usage of crack, I still feel he is beating the "maybe drugs are good" drum too hard. Do some people handle drug use better than others? Yes. Are there a fortunate few who can somehow isolate occasional drug use from the rest of their productive lives, thus not significantly harming anyone else but perhaps their own long-term health? Yes. But the reality is that drug addiction is a terrible problem in this country, and "harder" drugs like crack have made a mess of a staggering number of lives -- both the addicts themselves and their families.

Often drug users can hide their habit for awhile and appear to be in control. If they appear healthy, don't have financial issues, and are holding a steady job, one can almost conclude that their drug use has no negative consequences. But it rarely stays that way. There's the addictive qualities of drugs (both physical and psychological) which ramps up the usage. There's the tendency to use them more during life's more stressful moments, and then the results of the drug usage in turn make those stresses worse, which then causes more drug use.

There shouldn't be a discussion about the "good side of drug use", because when it's all said and done, there is no good side fro the vast majority of people.

There are some drugs that can be considered 'good'. There are some drugs that can not be considered 'good' under any circumstance. They would be cocaine, heroin, crack and meth. Those are the no-no's. The only thing that comes from those four are shattered lives. Basically if you can't get a script then it isn't good, end of story.
